Replace both capacitors. There is repair of them. Cheaper Thant a new motor. Ensure that the start contacts are not welded together,

Testimonial: "Pulled capacitors out and seems the start capacitor is bad, leaking the insulation and it was the one that was hot. i'll replace both tomorrow and cross fingers. Thanks"

SOURCE: breaker keeps tripping

If the breaker itself is more than 15 years old, replace it. If it continues to switch off, check the amp draw of both the inside and outside unit.

SOURCE: Starting problems

IF YOUR PRETTY SURE DRAW A CAPACITOR WIRING DIAGRAM AND THEN TAKE YOUR CAPACITORS TO ANY MOTOR SHOP OR SUPPLY HOUSE LIKE WW GRAINGER. THEY CAN CHECK THE MICROFARRADS OR UNIFARRADS OF YOUR CAPACITORS. YOUR START CAPACITORS HAVE THE LARGER MF OR UF RATING AND ARE TYPICALLY LARGER IN SIZE. YOUR P.O.S. INGERSOL RAND MAY EVEN BE A 3500 RPM MOTOR AND COULD HAVE UP TO 5 CAPACITORS. 3 OF WHICH ARE START. IS YOUR WIRE LARGE ENOUGH? IS YOUR BREAKER LARGE ENOUGH? IS YOUR COMPRESSOR UNLOADING THE HEAD PRESSURE WHEN IT CUTS OFF? IS IT OUTSIDE AND TOO COLD IN THE MORNINGS? MAKE SURE YOUR WIRING IS LARGE ENOUGH BECAUSE THAT IS USUALLY THE PROBLEM. YOU HAVE SINGLE PHASE BUT IS YOUR VOLTAGE CORRECT 208V OR 230 V. ALL WIRING AND GAUGING CHARTS ARE BASED ON 100 FT OF WIRE . MOST COMPRESSORS PULL 3 TIMES THE AMP RATING ON INITIAL STARTUP THEN COM DOWN TO AMPS LISTED ON THE MOTOR.

SOURCE: gfci breaker keeps tripping

It may not relate to this problem but my exterior GFCI breaker kept tripping after a winter warm spell. Solved it by drying the breaker with a hair dryer for about 10 minutes. Warm wet air had condensed inside the breaker.

Why does my air compressor motor K56A28B23 230 Volt keeps throwing my breaker.

use meter to ensure that you have 220Vac. remove cover from pressure switch and ensure that 220 vac is is applied to motor side. The start circuit may be stuck. usually the switch is located on the inside rear of motor. check centrifugal switch

My pool man stated my pump clogged and tripping the breaker. After trouble shooting we find its the motor we tested at different sources and find the same issue the breaker trips. Is the capacitor

Might be but unlikely I would have thought if the rcd is tripping. That would indicate a current leak to ground which is very unlikely to be caused by a dodgy capacitor..

If the mcb is tripping immediately it indicates a large overload such as might be caused by shorted turns in the motor windings (or bad wiring).

The mcb might trip after a short time with a faulty capacitor - the usual sign the capacitor has failed is a humming noise and the motor turning very slowly or not at all, usually the latter.

There are some variables depending whether the capacitor is just a start capacitor or a combination start and run type.

How do I check the start and run caps on a 5hp.22gal compresor. runs for 1 or 2 sec. then trips breaker.

To properly test capacitors requires a capacitor tester some multimeters do this. An indication of properly functioning capacitor can be checked with multimeter and checking ohms. The ohms on meters highest setting should show resistance for a couple seconds then go open. I'm curious to know amp draw when breaker trips and ohm out motor leads.

Air Compressor trips breaker under load. If I remove the belt the motor runs fine, spins freely as does the compressor pump. With the tank pressure empty, the compressor starts and runs fine. When it...

Most people recommend replacing the motor capacitor in this situation, since a faulty cap will reduce the starting torque. But in my case the check valve was the culprit - there was too much back pressure on the head.

Breaker trips when you try to start compressor motor spins a little before tripping breaker

Just fixed my compressor. It would start ok when the tank was empty but trip the breaker if it tried to start with pressure. Searched and read about weak caps, or problem with check valve or pressure switch leaving pressure in the pump head, etc. Turned out that the black plastic box which holds the 2 start up caps and is attached to the end of the motor with 2 screws had cracked on the bottom. The black box had tilted out enough that the start up caps switch was not engaging. Pushed on the lower part of the box and it started perfectly. Fixed it for the cost of some 2 part epoxy. Maybe not your fail, but definitely worth checking out first.

the start capacitor on the motor body is weak, the motor needs this component to over come the air pressure when cycling to re-build the low air pressure, change both the start and run capacitors when doing the start because the other run capacitor is just as old and it will soon fail

Tripping the circuit breaker means that something is shorted out. A fan motor or the compressor, most likely. Disconnect the compressor or turn the thermostat up so high the compressor doesn't start. If the breaker still trips, the fan motor or its capacitor are the problem. If the breaker stays on, the compressor or its capacitor are causing the problem.
