Start by replacing fuel. Completely drain the tank and carburetor fuel bowl. Do not use what fuel you may have, get 2 gallons of fresh fuel from gas station. If problem clears then likely water in fuel.
If still backfires with fresh fuel then likely an ignition issue. Failing ignition module or possibly a sheared flywheel key. Try reducing spark plug gap to .025" .

maybe the thermal sensor in the engine is overheated..it is inthere to keep the engine from frying.
SOURCE: engine dies, starts right back up then dies, now won't start
Springtime start ups after sitting up for awhile can be a problem. You have nothing to loose, spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner. That may be just what is needed for an easier spring start.
SOURCE: yamaha warrior won't start
a yamaha warrior isnt a 2 stroke. they make a street bike nad a four stroke quad. Check your carburator. check your spark plug and check your stator. it may be very minor considering it was running fine then just went out. no noise or anything. you would have heard something if you broke something internal.
SOURCE: generator will start and run easy, then just die.
Check for loose wiring connections, especially at the run or kill switch. Generators vibrate a lot so it could be as simple as something loose.

At the controller, you need to see if it is actually sending electricity out of the Generator/Alternator, have a look where the leads from the power making unit mates, (Think of it as a motor in reverse) onto the board. There should be an AC Voltage there, then, work back, or out from there, trace the Voltage until it stops, thats the problem... Check the Breaker isn't tripped or faulty too.
