The adjuster is on the right side just in front of the rear wheel. its the clutch rod / brake rod . you will see a spring on the shaft with two nuts one used to lock the adjustment. loosen the nuts and turn the nuts so the nuts go towards the back of the tractor. keep checking the peddle for brake .

Park on a firm, flat, level surface (garage floor, driveway, etc.
Tractor in neutral, engine OFF look in front of the right side rear tire and locate your brake rod leading to the brake arm on the side of the transaxle. You will note in the bottom center of the brake arm there is a bolt with a nut sticking out about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Tighten this nut just until you can no longer roll the tractor back and forth using the fender or the wheel. At this point, back the not off 1/2 TURN ONLY this should give you brakes. If it does not, you are going to have to do a lot more than just adjust them

My 12 year old pouan riding mower model 287707 when foot brake is pressed mower wont stop

If you look around the rear axle you should see a half moon shape shoe that is the brake and there should be a rod coming off of that to adjust the brake.

Simplicity Legacy mower 17hp

You will have to get that from Simplicity, but having the model # does allow you to identify and buy parts. For example here:

Per your own question that is the model # just use the 13AM762F765, There should have been a 2nd set of numbers and those would be your Serial number 9 digits followed with (000005) which is year built. I have exact same mower

Lawn Mower wont start

You need to obtain a manual for Briggs & Stratten engines. All the info you need will be in it. The most common cause for non starting in these engines is "Tight Tappets" Wether it's an OHV or the old "L" head engine, because they rev and work so hard, the valves seat themselves deeper into their seat which reduces the valve clearance. There is no adjustment on the older "L" engines, so you have to remove metal from either the valve stem, ot the lifter itself. I have in the past done this in situ with a point file, but it is a tedious job. Otherwise you must remove the head and take out the valves and grind the stems. A tricky task and probably should be done by a mechanic.
