Sometimes, if the Garmin GPS battery is allowed to fully discharge, it would require charging directly via USB cable connected to a PC or Mac before it would accept a charge for the cigarette lighter again. Try connecting this way for 4 - 8 hours or more before going forward.

Check the cigarette lighter plug in another "known good" lighter socket / vehicle to help rule out a defective socket. A socket without power indicates anything from needing to change a "simple to replace" fuse - or a bigger problem - damaged wiring in the vehicle (if the socket is used to light cigars & cigarettes - vacuum the socket out to remove ash and tobacco that may collect inside). Trying the GPS elsewhere helps eliminate possible problems with the socket. If it doesn't work elsewhere, depending on the plug that goes into the socket, it too may have a built-in fuse. Check the plug for an exposed fuse - or see if the tip unscrews to provide access to a fuse inside. If unsure, the tech Support people at Garmin are a great source for free help.

Lastly, dirt or grime on the "cradle to GPS" connection or "cable to cradle" connection could be causing the failed connection. In short - carefully inspect all points of connection and remove any deposits found.

Cannot charge garmin in the car

I assume when your charging it out of the car you are using the usb port? Check the fuse in the tip of the car charger and if it is good, chances are your cradle is defective. This is a common problem with the 700 series. Check out GPSNSTUFF.com for cradles and chargers.

Can I charge through the compter?

Yes it can be charge using a Garmin mini USB cord and your computer. Charge it over night and you should be good to go for a few hours depending on the quality of your batteyr. The cradle can be replaced if you are sure it's the problem. This is not uncommon for the cradle fail. A USB and/or nuvi 6xx Cradle can be found at GPSNSTUFF.com, hope this helps

Does`t seem to charge w/USB, in car after two hours only get 4 batteries is this normal?

Mine does the same thing, after years of freezing heating and thawing in the car the batteries just won't hold a charge anymore.Getting a replacement battery would cost about $24 plus shipping.

It is possible to change the battery yourself.

Garmin Nuvi 750 car cradle/charger does not charge the unit. USB charger works, so not the battery. Replaced the cigarette lighter jack and still does not work. Problem must be in the dash mount cradle...

Hi tbrick

if you dont have the original charger, the 750 take a special car charger because of the traffic feature...it has a flat end about 3/4" to 1" long that fits in the cradle, but you can use a garmin usb charger, you just wont be able to use the traffic feature.

if thats a little confusing ( i tend to do that) i try and explain it another way.

if you think you need or want one of those chargers, just post back to me.

The charger/traffic receiver glows green but it does not charge the unit. How can i test whether the fault is a, the charger, b the cradle or c, the unit

hi,

1st of all let me say im on my 3 cradle now for my 760 because the connection inside the cradle where it mounts to the board is pretty poor.

since you said the traffic/charger has the green light lite, that means the charging part of it is working.

you can verify if its the cradle or the connection on the bottom of the gps where the cradle mounts by using the usb cable supplied with your garmin.

plug it in for a while, then check the battery meter after you unplug it..if its charging, the meter would have risen beyond what it was before you tried to charge it. the same can be done with a regular garmin charger (the one that uses the usb connection for the car charger to charge it)

Charger does not charge and battery is draining for Garmin Nuvi 750. What is the problem?

Check for power at the cord. Then check for power at the rectacle. If you have good power but it still doesn't charge, send to Garmin for repairs.

Garmin nuvi is no longer charging via car adapter. I plug it into the car lighter as usual, but it never charges and continues to operate off of battery life.

Your car adapter may be broken. try unscrewing the top of it to check the fuse inside the cable. that can easily be replaced. other than that it could be the cradle (if your cable plugs into your cradle) or the back port of the unit in a worst case scenario

When I plug in the Garmin to charge it, the screen goes completely black and I get no directions. When I unplug it, the map returns with directions. Please help , Thank you James

If you are plugging it into your computer, or charging it through the USB port, the Garmin NUVI will go into "DATA MODE". You must use the car cradle to charge it and stay in navagation mode.

Garmin NUVI 660 power problem.

To charge a nuvi, use one of the following methods:
  1. Connect the nuvi to the suction cup mount and the vehicle power cable.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the nuvi and the computer. The computer will charge the nuvi as long as the computer is on. However, the unit will be in Mass Storage Mode and normal operation is not possible.
  3. Connect the AC power cable and the nuvi to a wall outlet.
Please note: All of the nuvi series will come with a suction cup mount and vehicle power cable to charge the nuvi. However, only some of the nuvi models will come with an AC power cable and/or USB cable. If they did not come with the nuvi, they would be optional cables and would be a separate purchase. Garmin only recommends using an AC power charge that is purchased from Garmin. Third party power cables may not charge the nuvi. These cables may be purchased from Garmin or Garmin's dealers.
