Convection needs fan drive to force the air into the oven cavity. The fan may be direct motor drive or belt driven. If the latter the belt may be broken or simply have stretched and come off.
Before removing the cover of the oven in attempt to carry out any maintenance such as replacing the Oven cavity lamp, make sure the oven is disconnected from the power point ! The voltages in a microwave oven ARE LETHAL !

You probably have a bad thermistor.
You can usually find
helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full
model number here.
(At that site, that part is misspelled as "thermister" for your model).
There
should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very
helpful
when troubleshooting & testing.
At
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
Accessing some components for testing will require you to remove the oven from the wall.
If
so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have
two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.
You can download GE
owner's manuals and installation instructions here.
We're
happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your
thoughtful rating of our answer.

There is a small thermodisc temperature protector in the top of most MWO that cuts off power when over temp was reached or maybe fails all by itself.
I replaced two last year with resettable type but getting to them is a large job all by itself. RE: removing the top cover

This sounds like a capacitor breaking down on the main control board, while the microwave is cycling, then when it stops to go to the default display, it's not allowing the display to power up. Another possibility is a bad timer, or a slightly oxidized pin on the control board, etc. Not your everyday problem, but you might get lucky if you go into it, disconnect and reconnect wires and connectors, and make sure they're clean (electrical contact cleaner, qtip and alcohol, or fine emery cloth).
Heed the warning in the following blog before you attempt to open it up and get inside:

Hope it's just a simple thing, and good luck.
