Sounds like the anti-frost heater is turning on in the freezer. Depending upon the make it can be a faulty controller board or that the light is staying on inside the freezer (also caused by a faulty controller board). Have you had the board changed?

JH, did you notice if the freezer back panel was full of frost first time it started thawing? If so you may have a defrost problem. I've had 4 of these control boards (jazz boards) fail on this model in the last week. Behind the front grill, there should be a tech sheet that will show you how to run the componet tests at the control board. Part number for the board is 12002339. This board controls compressor, defrost, damper and fans. Catriver.

you have a defrost problem, could be bad adaptive defrost board,t-stat heater, when you open freezer door listen for fan if fan is blowing check the t-stat,look at it and see if it has a buldge on it,sometime you can see this and tell it's bad, you'll need a meter to read out the heater and other parts to see whats bad, might be a good idea to call a tech to do this, when you find problem you have to melt everything out again

SOURCE: Freezer & fridge works great for two weeks

its probably the defrost heating element located just below the evaporator coil, remove the evaporator cover and check the terminals on the element, then disconnect one wire off the element and check it for continuity

Freezer does not freeze anymore

the freezer usually has the condensor coil sandwiched ilong the outer cabnet and in the back the lines come out in to the compressor compartment as a tech i have found the steel line rusts where the epoxy coating is no longer in tact so i would say you most likely have leaked out the refrigerant

Why is my freezer working but not my frig in frigidaire upright with seperate doors

Check the rear is clean and clear. The condenser should be warm, not hot. If it cools down towards the end of the rungs and the last bit is cold. suspect short of gas.
Further check any fans etc and remove any excess ice, and make sure the door seals ok.

Frigidiare upright freezer has just stopped cooling

I was hoping it would be something like a cracked door seal, or a faulty thermostat, etc., but after reading the rest of your info, I've concluded the likely cause is a slow leak in the refridgerant line(s). I've seen many of these fairly new upright freezers with this problem.

Finding the leak is easy for a service tech to find, but the cost of the service tech isn't cheap and unfortunately, the repair cost will probably exceed the cost of a new freezer, but you can try to call a repair tech and see if they can give you a rough estimate over the phone or if they think it's worth fixing, etc.

My advice is to replace it. The cost of food you've lost has probably exceeded the price of a new freezer - and you've had this happen twice now. These days it seems that some appliances are being designed and built as "throw aways" due to the high repair cost.

Wished I had some better news for you, but unless you've got all the specialty tools; (charging gauges, vaccum pump, Freon, etc.) needed to do the repair yourself, along with the technical knowledge, it's likely not worth having the repair service contracted. Best Regards.

Not cooling it is on and has been working fine, but woke up today and everything is melting- being thawed out - freezer is not cold

Hi there,

You need to check Condenser -
Self-defrosting refrigerators all have a set of coils and a cooling fan, usually under the refrigerator, that need to be cleaned regularly. If these coils get coated with dust, dirt or lint, the refrigerator may not cool properly. The coils may appear to be a thin, black, wide radiator-like device behind the lower kick-panel. To clean them, disconnect the refrigerator from the power source, use a refrigerator condenser brush (see the Appliance Accessories section) and your vacuum cleaner to clean the coils of any lint, pet hair, etc. You may not be able to get to all of the condenser from the front, it may be necessary to clean the remainder of the condenser from the rear of the refrigerator.

Good Luck!!

Thanks

Not Cooling Fridge Or Freezer keeps Freezing up (New Defroster)

There are 3 parts to the defrost system,Which did he replace? You should ask and don't name the parts for him,Let him tell you what he replaced. Here are the 3 parts to listen for.

Improper installation,a faulty part,or a short could cause it to fail in that short time.
  1. Defrost timer
  2. Defrost element
  3. Defrost thermostat.

Any other question, feel free to ask

Amana self defrosting upright freezer - drain plug

The subject is a Eureka Model 350 hand held steamer that can be found at Lowes and other places for around $49.95. With this steamer you can thaw out an evaporator as quick as if you were using a heat gun or hair dryer but without the slightest concern about melting plastic or wiring. By using steam instead of pouring water (yes many still do) there is little to clean up. With the many attachments it comes with there are other uses (i.e. cleaning, thawing drains, thawing IDI fill tubes, etc.). The steam also makes the replacement IDI fill tube (rubber end) more pliable and easier to complete the installation when used at the end.
This unit has a trigger and can be used to blow out a stopped up drain on a refrigerator by letting the pressure build up a little then blow through the drain with one of the attachments. As for thawing out evaporators it had a fine jet tip for actually CUTTING through solid ice.
Another great use for this tool is refrigerator door gaskets. The hot steam works faster than a heat gun with out the worry.

Note: Do not aim steam directly onto the plastic freezer liner. The rapid temperature change could damage the liner.

Temp alarm going off and things are starting to thaw...

Check to see that the temp control is working (turning on the compressor). You also can have a bad start device on the compressor so it's not turning on reliably. Worst case is there is a leak and the refrigerant has leaked out and no longer cooling. If you can hear/feel the compressor running (should be warm/hot to touch) and you have no cooling then you have that sealed system problem (no refrigerant gas left)
