Hi Bob, for what you say, your remote control has problems in the ignition, try to disassemble it and clean the plate of the accounts, with a little liquid glass cleaner, you will observe, as a accumulation of rubber residue, on the contacts in the remote control platelet, clean and dry very well
DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF ALCOHOL
Let it dry very well, then assemble it again and see if it is solved
Comment the results

You will either have to use your Onkyo remote to teach the Harmony those functions or try one of the similar model receivers in the Harmony software. I had to chose a similar DVD player in the list in order to get my Harmony to play nice with my DVD player.
SOURCE: Direct TV remote "tv input" button won't work with my Sony TV
I came across this looking for a similar solution for my Samsung TV, and I found the solution on ehow.com. Apparently after you program the remote for your TV you have to hold mute and select again until it flashes twice then put in 960 to make the remote control TV input too. Note you're remote should be in TV mode while you do this. It seems silly that the DirectTV guy wouldn't do this when programming the remote.
SOURCE: The Vol button on my Onkyo RC-588M remote doesn't work
It probably can be fixed. Dirt and such gets on the contact pads...take it apart by carefully unscrewing it and remove the top half with the buttons facing you. You will likely see that the buttons are made of molded sheet of silicone, lift that off. Beneath where the mold was for the volume control you will see the actual buttons that control the volume, inspect it to see if it simply got pressed down too far and try to operate it that way and clean anything that needs it while you have it open. If it works without the silicone button cover panel on it, then you can take a small peice of paper wad and tuck it into the mold for the volume button so that when you press on it, it always makes contact.

If it has set-up code/s to Onkyo, you can. If you wish to get more; check the sites linked here. It has set-up code list & set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. One among it has general set-up codes to check with TVs and other devices are given, in the order of the 'device's brand name list' in alphabetical order. Pull up older posts. Search the sites by type in the brand name to your device in its search box at the top right part of the display window. It will help you to find the document easily.
