Toshiba 36A50 Horizontal Line

Over the last three months, the image slowly compressed from bottom and top. Earlier, I could leave the TV on for a few hours, and a full image would appear. Now there is only a 1-2" horizontal image going from left to right at the middle of the screen. Now I know this is probably a bad capacitor on the vertical output, but can someone tell me the exact possible locations of this capacitor? I have the skills to replace the capacitor I just don't know where it is?

Does anyone have the schematics for the Toshiba 36a50? I need to know which capacitors to replace to fix my vertical issues.

  • evil_awd Dec 14, 2007

Or how about the location of the vertical output IC? A description of it, anything?

I have the same horizontal line only problem with a Toshiba CF32H50. I bought a schematic from Sams. The problem is intermittent. How to get started with the fix please.

I have the same problem. The picture started compressing from the bottom and then from the bottom and top. Until now I pretty much have a 1 inch line across the middle. I will let you know how it gets fixed.

I have the exactly same problem, I'm in the early stage where the picture would come in after about 30 minutes of staring at the thin horz. line. Any idea on how much it cost to have a repair guy come out and fix this? I'm in Long Beach, CA.

Ok, The vertical Ic is IC301 Ta8427K And Capacitors around IC chroma 2.2 uf 50 volts. You will see small red capacitor ( with C302....4 or 5 ) reference. Replaced others capacitors on vertical section 220 uf 35 V or 100uf 35V. I hope this can help you. Or if do you have any picture chasis, send to me and I will show you where are the problem., Thank you

I just ran into this problem in July 2012. I noticed a thin white horizontal line at the bottom of the screen a few years ago. Then there two appear this year, then the vertical size would change up and down. A quick smack of the TV would fix it, then eventually a thin horizontal line. The sound worked fine. Noe Z Bernabe's solution clearly identified the problem chip. The hard part was finding a free schematic to trace down the chip's location on the motherboard. I found a free one here for the 27" TV and it identified the same location on the 36" TV.

The schematic location is Q301. You can't search on the keyword on the schematic pages. Look at page 37, towards the bottom right. There will be a mostly rectangle box around the chip with the upper left corner cutoff. It has 3 suboxes around the words, OUT, DRIVE and AMP. This video on how to discharge the picture tube was also helpful.

There is only one screw that anchors the motherboard to the TV and it is located in the bottom left back when facing the rear of the TV.
A quick way to find the chip is to look on the motherboard for a vertical aluminum heat sink that sticks up a > 3".
I did a quick resoldering of the 7 chip leads to the motherboard with a Weller soldering iron and a very little amount of solder. It helps to put the soldering iron on the chip's wire lead and then apply the solder wire.

The problem was solved and picture looks better now and has no white lines at the bottom!

Toshiba, 36A50 picture is a thin white line. Can this be repaired?

Yes...this TV may be repaired. The line you describe is in the center and is horizontal across the TV. You will need to resolder the vertical IC pins. This vertical IC is mounted on a large heatsink. Under the board you will see there are 5 or 7 pins that will have rings around them. Resolder these. And you should replace two or three capacitors that are next to this IC. A bad cap will overheat an IC and separate the solder grounds. If you can find my expertise page on this website, you will see the repair in more detail. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support.

Toshiba 36A50 TV Picture Failure. When turning on the tv only half of the screen is used. Only the verticle is affected. Horizontal is fine. As the tube warms up it covered the rest of the screen. Now it...

This is an easy repair if you've ever soldered and would not be too costly for a repair shop to do it for you. The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminum heat sink with the part on it labeled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by re-soldering the contacts of the IC- To find the IC follow the 4 wires that come from the Yoke (which is a contained coil of wires slipped over the neck of the picture tube(s)) back to the board. 2 of the wires go to the horizontal o/p and 2 to the Vertical o/p the thinner gauge wires are for the vertical. Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Toshiba TV (about 7 years old)

You had parts in the vertical deflection circuit failing, most common are the vertical output IC and possibly several capacitors also in the same circuit.

TOSHIBA 36A50 HORIZONTAL LINE WHEN TV IS TURNED ON

If flexing the board will "fix" the problem, then the most likely issue is poor solder connections on that board. Look for any connections that appear grainy or have rings and resolder them. The IC involved here is the vertical IC which will be a small flat IC attached to a heatsink. It may be marked LA7837 or something similar and have about 9-11 pins.

Try the resoldering and update this with your results.

36 Inch Toshiba - Single Bright Horizontal Line

You're losing your horizontal voltage that drives the fly back transformer. Poking around inside can be hazardous to your health since you have to worry about high voltages present on the picture tube even when the TV is off. You may still be able to get parts for those old TV's but they may hard to find. You can try here, but if you have no background in TV repair, it will be pointless.
