My 5 yr. old computer sometimes makes a loud humming sound; sometimes smells like something overheated? and sometimes shuts down. I really don't want to replace it. What do you think problem may be?

That the cooling fan is not functioning properly

Testimonial: "How can I determine whether cooling fan is the problem?"

  • Anonymous Sep 14, 2009

Shella To determine if its the fan put your ear close to the fan outlet and detrmine the ticking noise. The fan should spin quite fast as well without any such noise. If you have the case open you can see and hear the fans more easily to work out which one is making all the noise. Bearings are usually what make the click. If they eventually jamb up which they will do the fan will stop The boards will overheat and your PC will getb so hot parts will melt and pop! and you will have greater expense than a $10 fan replacement.

The power supply has a fan ( large silver box with many multi colored wiores coming from it) if that fan fails the power supply has to be replaced as a whole unit if the fan is a problem and that is about$120.00. The case fans are cheaper and easier to replace, as i said about$10.00

    Cheers and good luck

Have you ever cleaned out the inside? Dust collects everywhere. Check the fan(s) operation, the one on top of the CPU and the one in your power supply especially. Power supply fans are notorious for going bad.

Note: The above is for desktop PC's. If you have a laptop, you still have cooling fans and may need to clean the unit out inside with compressed air.

Testimonial: "Waynerd - thank you so much. I have never opened the tower and checked for dust on the fans. This does makes sense judging by amount of dust nearby."

    Sheila,

You will need to open the case and visually inspect them when power is applied. They should spin freely as soon as the power is turned on.

The power supply fan should be visible from the back of the PC. Again it should spin as soon as power is turned on.

One last thing...you can use "canned air" that is available in any electronic/office supply store to blow it out. Best to take it outside to do it.

The computer could be overheating and causing it to shutdown (ie thermal overload problem). This is usually causes by the fan and heatsink being clogged with dust or the fan could be faulty and not spinning freely.
Remove the dust from the fan and heatsink assembly and if the fan is faulty then replace it.

Program button no response

The cd shouldn't be making a noise, but your cd drive might be, there could be something wrong with it try to identify any cracks or marks on the cd, if there are any that may be the cause behind the program not responding. The loud hum you're hearing could be due to overheating, carefully check your computers temperature, if the cd is damage the loud hum may be produced due to the cd drive overworking itself trying to read a damaged disc. Hope this helps.

Hi MsElle,

Sadly it sounds like your system is overheating and shutting down as a precaution. Make sure your system is getting as much ventilation as possible. If your system has been getting enough ventilation it would indicate that something is causing the cooling system of the console to malfunction. It's probably saveable but i would suggest you stop using it and contacting tech support immediately.

Hope this helped,

Thermostat display has an image of a flame

Sounds like the circulating fan on your furnace is not running. This will cause the furnace to shut down due to overheating, and you can smell the overheating as well. You will probably have to press a reset button on the burner to clear the overheat shutdown. Check the fan belt if there is one. If no belt you have an integral motor. Remove all power from the system and make sure the fan spins freely. If it doesn't, try to work some oil into the bearings. These things always fail on a holiday, but if you can't get the fan spinning you're going to have to call in a HVAC specialist.

Dryer making loud noise

the humming noise is most likely your motor. does it overheat or shut down on you? do you smell anykind of burning? Joe

Wont start up.

Sounds like the motor is failing. The main cause of failure is overheating due to clooged venting. Is the dryer taking more than 60 mins to dry?? If so then the vent is clogged. Its likely too that the motor is covered with lint and not being able to properly dissipate its own heat, you could clean it and see if it helps but usually once they are shutting down overheated (the burning smell is the motors' internal windings being very hot) they need replacement.
