I have a built in Sharp Carousel microwave (R-1480). I was boiling water on the stove top directly under the microwave and had the mirowave fan running to **** up the steam. Then I placed something in the microwave to heat and pressed start. When I did this, the microwave began to make loud popping sounds. After this, the microwave no longer heats and makes a loud humming sound when it is turned on. The display, light, and turntable still work, just no heat. The fuse was blown, I replaced it. Should I replace the magnatron, or is it something else? Thanks for assistance.
Okay, first we need to separate the situations. You were boiling water on the stove and had the range hood fan running to **** up the steam. Then you put something in the microwave to heat and you heard a pop and then zip-o.
The water on the stove has nothing to do with the situation, the fan you turn on is not part of the microwave, so it has nothing to do with the microwave.
The pop you heard and then the humming suggests the magnetron failed. You said you found a blow fuse and replaced it and still nothing, right? The magnetron is the most likely culprit...I would think it is safe to say that the magnetron shorted and drew enough current to blow the fuse.
Replace the magnetron and if that doesn't work, let me know here. Good Luck!
Replacing the Magnatron is major surgery and the cost of doing so may well exceed the cost of a refurbsihed model or even a new one in some cases.
Yopu might find if you leave it for a while it will reset as if hot steam got inside it might have set the protection sensor off to protect the unit from damage.
Dennis, I too had the same problem yesterday. I was boiling potatoes and the steam was going up. I put some milk in the microwave over my stove and it made a loud buzzing/shorting out. noise and then I immediately opened it up. I shut the door back on it and it would no longer heat anything up. It now also is loud when its running and it wasnt before. i believe the steam did have something to do with it. help!
