Are you trying to record while it is "locked"? I believe you can lock the whole device so you can't accidentally press a button. Are you familiar with this? Let me know if you need help figuring out if it's locked or not, I am trying to research this now.

You are NOT supposed to re-format using your PC...you re-format just using the device itself...refer to your operating instruction to try to re-format again or download instructions from www.olympusamerica.com

Hi gff9,
If your recorder still won't work after replacing the battery, it's often caused by the [HOLD] switch. To correct this problem please follow the steps below.
Inserting the Battery:
1. Lightly press down on the arrow and slide the battery cover open.
2. Insert 2 size AAA alkaline batteries, observing the correct polarity.
3. Close the battery cover completely.
--> When the [Hold] switch is set to the direction of the arrow, the display is turned off after [HOLD] is displayed. Follow the next step without regard to it.
Note: An option Ni-MH Rechargeable Battery (BR401) from olympus can be used for the recorder.
Replacing the battery:
1. When the low battery appears on the display, replace the batteries as soon as possible. Size AAA alkaline batteries are recommended.
2. When the batteries are depleted appears on the display, and the recorder shuts off. To replace the battery, make sure that you set the [HOLD] switch to the opposite direction of the arrow before replacing.
Hope it helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.
