Jenn-Aire over-the-oven microwave is giving off a smell.

if it smells like wire burning, shut down the microwave immediately. give it the sniff test by sniffing around microwave to ensure smell is coming from microwave, check receptacle also. The microwave may not worth repairing bases on age and what a comparable new model cost. If receptacle call electrical to inspect and repair. What would you do if it caught fire,your life and home are worth more than a microwave.

magnetrons work only when the unit is cooking
it smells like an insulation from overheating wire so could be a fuse and failing transformer
take it in for a proper diagnosis and quote but if it is over 2 years old the cost to repair could be more than a replacement unit

The magnetron is failing, "heats food" and in some cases gives off a burning smell, "classic symptom" repairs will run close to a new microwave oven or more.

It is very possible it may have burnt wire or burnt capacitor. Remove unit, remove top cover and look inside to see if you see any burn marks or burnt wires. Also check fuse to see if it is good or not.

Yours will likely have a bad high voltage diode, transformer or magnetron, all of which are covered under the extended parts warranty for five years from the date of purchase!

All you have to pay is labor, unless it's less than the two-year full warranty, then there's no charge.

That's a really great warranty!

Turn if off, and leave it alone, remove it, if you can remove the unit, take it in for service, something is wrong if you smell electrical, most people for some reason can smell and identify correctly electrical or at least insulation burning smells, which means something is burning internally, not safe, fire hazard, unit needs to be repaired by qualified technician or replaced with new unit, take no chances, nothing you can do to repair this, could be a shorting transformer, or shorting power cables, but to attempt to trouble shoot this with email is a long shot, and depends on your experience expertize and testing equipment.

I wish I could give you a short easy answer, but the hazard and your safety is more important than a microwave.
