Turned it on, only 4 days old, everythings black and white, games play ok but in a grainy black and white

I am having the same issue. My TV is a flat widescreen VIZIO VX20L  with 480iSD active on TV and Standard TV (480i) selected, as it's the only one that is able to be selected, on the Wii.

I can't find the setting on my tv (even brought up the users guide) and still no luck.

    Please help.

  • flying3553 Dec 22, 2007

I too get a Black and white game presentation. The only color is in the volume control presentation and that is a great yellow. I bought it from a guy who had a costco printout from an online purchase.

  • bailey1972 Apr 28, 2008

My wii is also black and white, only on one of our televisions (LCD Widescreen Digix)

I have changed the AV output from Video - Scart - S-Video but still black and white. The red, yellow and white jacks are all in correctly and work fine on all our other tv's.

I know its a settings 'thing' but how and where???

    Anyone help

when i hooked it up everything is in black and white and i cant figure out how to change it into color

  • TPK81 May 12, 2008

Got a Wii for my birthday 2 weeks and everything was fantastic, until yesterday. It loaded up in the same way as normal but when the main wii menu screen appeared it was black & white.

I have taken out all leads and replaced them but no joy. Everything is the same: TV, leads everything - I just don't understand it.

  • Anonymous May 12, 2008

I just got a new Wii for my son's Birthday today. The Video cable supplied works fine and shows color but the componsite cable just Black and White.

I pulled out the Blue and Red cables - no color difference so my feeling is that these two plugs don't have any signal on them - I pulled out the Green cable and everything goes blank which is what I expected.

I bought a generic 3rd party cable for multiple games. Can the Wii have unique pinouts so that composite cables other than Nintendo's brand don't work?

  • Anonymous May 15, 2008

i played the same wii on hd tv it worked perfect when i play wii on my tv it works perfect but in black and white no color

  • mdavadies11 May 19, 2008

it seems on happen on lcd televisions, thats what i plugged into.
and on my television it has different component inputs, like its not the normal white red and yellow for video. it has a red blue and green input.
it works fine on all my other normal tv's but not on this one.
    just adding.

Bought the Wii Sport today and a Vizio flat screen tv to play it on. Seems to work but no color, just grainy black and white. All connections appear to be in order. This issue doesn't appear to be addressed on the nintendo/wii troubleshooting page. I guess I will have to call the 1-800 line tomorrow.....

I have this problem on my Samsung 63" plasma (new in Oct 2007). I am currently hooking up via the RGB cables that came with the Wii.. Very frustrating!! I have no idea how to get my TV to 'recognize' color. I'm going to go buy a Wii s-video or Wii Composite Video chord if I can find them.

My colour TV set turn into black & white

  • LeomaM Nov 26, 2008

Wii worked fine for about a onth , turned it on one day and dsiplaying b& w grainey picture.

Sent wii off to nintendo but its come back and they say nothing wrong with the wii but it still wont work.

Tried it through component and Scatt same result!!!

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2008

Same problem, grainy black and white display. Cause: hooking Wii to component (green, blue, red) rather than standard AV connectors (yellow, red, white). Solution: get a Wii component capable to use instead of AV one that comes with Wii. See this

I used to have a Tube TV. But we got rid of it and got a new flat screen TV that's way better but doesn't have color for my Wii. I know you can make it in color. But how?

  • Anonymous Jan 11, 2012

I found that there is a switch on the cable when selecting your source that goes into the wii console. I switched it on and instantly revealed my color screen. Hope this helps someone out there reading this thread.

I bought a wii a few days ago and like everybody else mine too was in black and white with a grainy picture. I have a Panasonic lcd flat screen and thought I had connected it corrected, I got somebody out to have a look at it and found out there are some connections on the side of the TV which I hadn't even noticed before, once I put the red white and yellow leads in these and set the TV to AV3 everything is in perfect colour. Hope this works for some of you.

    Harley 2004.

if your panasonic is anything like ours, as you're looking at it, on the right hand side you'll find some extra connections right down the side, not at the back, try putting the wii colour leads in these, then turning your tv to AV3. this is what someone did for me and the colour is perfect. good luck

I had this problem too. I have a 2010 model Samsung LED TV (UN40C6300SF). What's tricky: they combined the AV1 and COMPONENT on the same panel. I found this link helpful:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/supportOwnersHowToGuidePopup.do?howto_guide_seq=2664&prd_ia_cd=N0000058&map_seq=11034&regDt=20091030083043&page_gb=D&model_name=UN40C6300SF&type_ia_cd=N0000042&subtype_ia_cd=N0000058&row_index=8
I plugged the wii cables onto the back with the red and white in the left holes, and the yellow in the far right hole. DO NOT plug them all next to each other starting from the right.
Next you'll need to use your tv remote and go to the source menu and select AV (DO NOT select COMPONENT)

If you have a Samsung full HD 37" plug the yellow, red and white cables into the sockets on the LEFT side of the TV (not the back) and then select AV3. Worked for me!

Definitely a TV issue for me. Changed Wii to another input on TV and resolved situation. Need now to check how to get my Panasonic TV to recognise colour on AV2 & 3 because I prefer to keep DVD input as AV1!

  • judyanau Nov 04, 2010

That's the trouble "how to get the TV back to colour?"

  • willburnett4 Feb 11, 2011

i have a hd tv and i finally realized why it was black and white, i had to unplug the dvd input and put the wii's input in its spot, then it changed to color. maybe that will help people. if u have a dvd player unplug the red, white, and yellow cord and put the wii's cord in its place.

I had to use the (RCA) video inputs and not the component inputs. These are the ones made for video games. If you want to use the component input (Component cables are Red,White Red, Green, Blue). If you don't have any, you should be able to purchase them at your local electronics store like Radio Shack or Best Buy. Hope this helps, read below:

TV (This is your cable connection or TV; coax)
Component 1 (Must use component cables for this input/output; Red and White for audio, Red, Blue, Green for Video)
Component 2 (Must use component cables for this input/output; Red and White for audio, Red, Blue, Green for Video)
HDMI 1 (HDMI Cable)
HDMI 2 (HDMI Cable)
Video 1 (Must Use RCA cables, or RCA jacks; Red and White for Audio, Yellow for Video)
Video 2 (Must Use RCA cables, or RCA jacks; Red and White for Audio, Yellow for Video)

Sample of Component Cables:

All you have to do is change the channel to video and not component.

I bought the VIZIO and had the same problem.  You have to plug the Wii connectors into the side of the tv, not the back.

I just solved this problem for myself. You are plugged into the wrong AV on your TV. You probably have a choice of 3 or 4. Your cable is probably pugged into one. You might have a DVD plugged into another. If you have more than one more availaby, try another set of inputs. I was in AV 3, but I moved the plugs to Side AV.

Good luck.

Ok everyone this is simple.
There are two types of connections a gaming system uses:
RCA (red, yellow & white cables)
Component (red (x2), white, blue and green cables)

Everyone who's complaining that when switching to a new TV should buy the official nintendo wii component cable as this DID work for me whilst I was switching TV's.
Anybody else I cannot help you, although it may be worth buying a cable that if it does not work you cannot return, or simply asking for advice on other sites or at a local wii stockist. Preferably the on you bought your wii from.
Goodluck and I hoped this helped.

  • marc toebes Nov 06, 2010

bought the new cable connected to new Philips 7605, still B/W. any further advice?

  • AzizMohammad May 04, 2011

you need to get a Wii component cable in order for it to work. In the most basic way I can put it: the component cables break down the video feed into the 3 main colors - red, blue, and green...while the composite cable (regular Wii cable that has yellow, red, and white) doesn't do this - it has all the video in one cable (the yellow one)...so when you plug the yellow cable into one of the component inputs (either the red, blue, or green) you will only get black and white....

Where do you buy it?

seems to be a tv system problem.
in some countries are used ntsc system, if you connect it to a palm system will be black & white.
if this is your case you will need a transcoder to chahge signals.

Look for the a/v hookups on the side of the tv. I never realized they existed, but they worked perfectly.

I have the Samsung LN32A450 and it does not have side connectors only the back panel with 1 av input area. There is only 1 AV input and it is still black and white with fuzzy picture everywhere. I heard I need the special component cables for the Wii (about $5.00) but I want to do it without those cables!!!

If your are putting the RGB cables in through a scart socket, when you select the scart (ie AV2, AV3, AV4) press the coloured button twice. I think it's something to do with S-VHS or normal scart. Worked for me

The black and white issue is for sure a tv setting issue and thanks for those who solved this for me. You have to ensure you plug the yellow video cord into the video option (1, 2, or 3 etc) that will allow you to change your video input setting to "component" I have a samsung hdtv and for that tv it was video 2 - under input settings, i selected video 2 and chose "component" - corrected it immediately

Occasionally our Wii, which usually works fine, turns black and white and grainy (usually if it's been left on too long). turning the device off and back on again usually remedies the problem. has anybody else experienced this particular issue?

I had this problem and it turned out that the TV was expecting the input to be in the "S-Video" format. I changed the settings on the tv so that the input was in the "AV" format and now it works ok.

The AV1 channel is still black and white - What I had to do in the end was get a scart cable (And no it wasnt the official nintendo one which costs twice as much and does the same thing.) - The Wii is now on AV2 the same channel as the DVD and Sky TV - it works in perfect colour but is slightly darker (but this is because I had to use a scart extension - not enough scart sockets) Working on the AV2 does solve the solution for me and maybe many other people but it still doesnt solve the problem and we still dont know what caused the mysterious problem.

ALL OF YOU! You probably have your Input on Component 1 because it's plugged in to component 1 in the back. Well Component 1 has 2 inputs. Component 1 for Red Blue Green and such. AV is for the cables that the Nintendo Wii came with, the basic Yello, Red, White.

JUST SWITCH YOUR INPUT TO AV, vuuaalah!

Wii is 2 years old just got new tv set wii up and wii has no colour/sound. Colour is grainy black and white and sound only comes out of the wii remote.

please check your cables and make sure that they are on the right ports. simple solution. nothing wrong with your wii. New Tv can be a little confusing. remember just keep your wii on and test the ports till you get the right ones. If other devices are working such as dvd player then you need to replace the cables

Why is picture black & white? Sound and picture are good otherwise.

Hi, i bought a wii a few days ago and like everybody else mine too was in black and white with a grainy picture.

Take care

Tried to hook up to a AKAI Plasma TV...Only get black and white grainy picture

Ok this is a quick fix. All you ned to get a set of Wii HD cables from the store and all should be fine. Also you might not want to put your Wii on a Plasma TV its not good for the TV try using on LCD, LED, or plain old tv works best that way no image burn

Turned it on, only 4 days old, everythings black and white, games play ok but in a grainy black and white

If it's 4 days old and having problems there is a very simple solution -- call Nintendo and have it replaced. There is a 90 day warranty on the Wii... Nintendo will replace a 4 day old Wii:

Wii plays in black and white.

Check if the tv has different types of AV settings, as this affects whether the wii plays in black and white or colour.

Plug in the wii system and everything comes in black and white

Try plugging it into another scart socket, this sometimes happens when a tv does not support 60hz. the result is a screen that has no colour. You could try just plugging it onto the seperate av inputs. Most tv's these days have one scart that will work ok and in colour.

New Nintendo Wii

check you've got it on the right PAL/NTSC setting. It's very likely the 50/60hz setting. 480i running at 60hz is NTSC resolution although the PAL Wii of course uses the PAL signal. The TV probably tries to interpret the signal as a real NTSC signal because it's 480i 60hz and thus can't handle the colors. There has got to be an option to switch between NTSC and PAL.
Are you using the same SCART socket that you use for your other consoles or a different one? My SCART3 input on my Panasonic telly has two different modes - one which displays in colour, and one which displays in a sort of grainy black n' white. There is a purpose to it but I can't remember what it is. :-)

Anyway, you switch between the two by pushing the AV button and then hitting the colour button which corresponds to SCART3 a few times 'til you reach the correct setting.

It probably isn't that, but... y'know. Sanity check.
