if you go google and type in evinrude you will see numerous references to johnson outboards , evinrude/johnson inferring that they are using interchangeable parts or are in fact the same outboard made in different countries
If it's an electric start you need to get it from an after market supplier, Johnson Motors is gone. Go online to CDI Electrical and put in the specific information and it will give you the correct part number for what you need. Here's their part number.Johnson / Evinrude Wiring Harness: 413-9914
2 solinoides , one for up and one for down !!!! test trim switch then try swopping up solinoide to the down and problem could be solved !? check wires !
its in the remote control box as you should have a kill lanyard button on the side so if you fall out it stops the engine ! split the box and easy replacement or check , make or brake reading on amulti meter set on ohms !
The 70s Johnson or Evinrude outboards of similar sizes did not have any charging system. I had an old Johnson 50HP (key injection) mounted on an 18Ft Zodiac and I needed to remove and recharge the battery once every couple of weeks. Keep the battery dry and the contacts well greased.
i have a 1977 85 hp johnson outboard it started and idiled for about a minute and now i cant get it to fire at all its got good spark possibly not getting fuel but is there anything else i should check
Do you know the gauge is reliable thats telling you its too hot? 3 things to check: lean fuel mix, timing advanced too far, oil mixture too light. With the alcohol in todays fuel I would add more oil. In 1977 they had better fuel. Alcohol is a solvent, not a lubricant. The tubing may help minimally but the head passages are fixed. Good luck
