Nintendo DS Lite won't turn on

Hi, My son's DS won't turn on. The green light comes on... the screen flashes white for a split second... then it shuts off. I don't think it's the battery because the light flashes green. It was working just fine one minute then it wouldn't turn on again. We've had it for about 13 months and it's always worked properly. All the parts are original. Any ideas of what could be wrong or how I could fix it? Thanks.

exactly the same problem as jadiebears the green light comes on ,screen flashes white for a split second then everything shuts down and the green light goes off.tried recharging, yellow charge light comes on for a bit then turns green.will try and borrow another batt to make sure it's not that.

  • jleigh Dec 14, 2007

Same behavior here. My son dropped his DS Lite, and cracked the hinge on the power light side. I got a replacement case and did the install, and now the upper screen will flash white once, then goes off.

    Argh.

  • jleigh Dec 14, 2007

Thanks, Gimpoid! What specifically should I check for in the flex connector?

when I was working on the game I noticed that the cable that feeds through the hinge had gotten mangled a bit in the initial fall-- there was a light crease across it when I first opened the case. I didn't help matters fighting it through the bleeping cylinder. My guess is that's the faulty component-- would that make sense? Can I get a new ribbon connector, or do I need a whole new screen?

I bought the poor boy a replacement DS for Chanukah, so at this point I'm just tweaking. It would be fun to have a second unit in the house, though. :-)

  • stripwax Dec 16, 2007

Same for me. The console hasn't been dropped, could the cable have popped out of place all on its own? Should I try opening the DS myself to investigate or see what Nintendo think?

  • nosty123 Dec 24, 2007

  • oklavenez Jun 03, 2008

My son' s DS case were broken so I decided to replace the shell. I opened with the right tools and it was my second one but apparently something happened to it because after that (it was working fine before but broken) when you try to turn the DS on, the green light turns on for a moment, the screen flash for a second and then the whole thing turn off.

Do you think that the cause could be the ribbon cable or probably some of the fuses?

Appreciate your help because my son is driving me krazy.

i have the exact same problem, what kind of crappy product is nintendo selling us here, i think we should sue, okay jk but this is very frustrating because many people are having the same problem and nintendo needs to do something about this. Maybe it's a scam so the we can spend more money on their products trying to fix it...its just a thought.

The issue I had was that I had replaced the top screen. When i subsequently put the DS back together when I switched on I got a green LED for 1/2 second then the lower screen flashed and turned off. Even holding the button on wouldn't make it stay on.
The issue was caused by not connecting the top screen properly into the lower circuit board. I tried 5 times to get it right but you must make sure it is square and inserted into the connector as far as possible. There should be a millimetre or less between the connector and the ribbon wire shoulders. Have faith I been trying to get my sons DS working for 7 Months and as I a have sais tried fitting the ribbon 5 times. Oh for small hands.

Check the flex connector joining the bottom half of the case to the top half. Also, when working on things like these, take precautions against static, such as an earthing wristband (cheap and easily obtained) or just earthing yourself to something earthed in your home (not a socket - play it safe! Think radiator pipe, etc.). Check all connectors, they'r easily displaced and can seem like they're fully home when they're not.

  • Anonymous Dec 15, 2007

The cable is probably damaged - it causes this fault. Unfortunately you'll need a new screen (eBay) but when fitting, be extremely careful, it's so thin and fragile it gets easily torn. The metal collar is a menace, but there is a way to get the cable hrough gently. Make sure the large end with the contacts goes through the slot cut out for it, then very gently pull through while feeding the rolled up flex through the cylinder.

I had the same problem with two ds's that are lites by the way one had the top screen kinda broken off and the other just turned off on its own and somtimes wouldnt wanna turn on because it kept turning on with a green light and for a split second it would turn off with a white flash its because the top screen or somtimes the bottem arent connect to the ds right. if the top screen isnt connect at all the ds wont turn of but im guessing it loose so it just needs to be readjusted the way to fix it is to either send it to nintendo if its under warranty or fix it like i did on ebay it was $39.98 (included shipping) for the first problem and they add money if there are other things wrong like you need a new button or bottom screen just look at this ad and call them. they will tell you whats wrong with it when you mention the symptoms

In my case Nintendo we able to confirm that this was a problem with the LCD and they have repaired my DS (free of charge, even free shipping to/from Nintendo repairs workshop, as my DS was still under warranty at the time). A new battery wasn't the problem for me (I know because my DS still has the same battery it had when I sent to Nintendo) - it was the LCD

A quick fix that worked for me is just to open the ds as wide as it can (but dont force it to much) and it turns on and stays on long enough to save some money for the repair

Check the f1 and f2 fuses. they are located one by the power plug and the other right next to the large card slot. use a multi meter. is no conenuity then replace fuse or juse solder over the top of the fuses. it will prob. work.

Usually that means that the screen is not making a good connection. i recently replaced a lcd botttom screen on the ds lite and it would do that but once i connected it in it works fine.
sometimes it is the battery but to find out you have to open the ds lite. also if you dont have the tri wing screwdriver i dont recommend you open it. you need this screwdriver so that you dont strip the screw head

Had the same problem after replacing motherboard. Redid the top LCD connection (took awhile to really get it in there). Now works fine. So glad I found the solution here; I was losing my mind! Thank God for the Internet!

SOURCE: Nintendo DS Lite won't turn on

My kids did the same thing. What I did to get it to work was to push back on the top and hold it turn it on. If it comes on then turns off after you let it go get 2 rubber bands and put the 1st. one on the top left down to the bottom right. The 2nd. one goes from the top right right to the bottom left. Then keep turning it on while moving the top to find the sweet spot.

SOURCE: Blurry screen - Nintendo DS Lite

It sounds like the DS is nearing the end of its life - They are very delicate systems, If it is under warranty I recommend immediately returning it for a new one but as it is most likely.

I have however read the Li-ion battery is generally the hardware that dies first.

Plug it into the wall, does it become clearer?

I am sorry to say there is not alot I can do hardware wise with a DS as they are very precise and delicate to handle hence I have not had the opportunity to open one. Warranty seems your only option if keeping it on the charger does not alleviate the issue.

Hope this was of some help.

It sounds like the battery is dead. You can order a replacement battery direct from Nintendo at http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=108205

I turn My nintendo DS lite on and after maybe 2 seconds the green light flashed and shuts off. Help!?

Hi,

Do either of the screens flash just before the green led goes of?

If it does then the screen that doesn't flash is faulty... If you have a warranty then i'd suggest sending it in for repair if not and you fancy a go at a bit of DIY let me know and I will take you through the process of dismantling the DS lite, reconnecting the screen to see if its just come loose and if you need to I can tell you how to go about fitting a new screen.

Hope this helps,

Ds lite flashes on but fuses are ok

One or both your screens have blown.

Try removing the motherboard from the screens and attach the battery the green light should turn on and stay on.

Now attach the lower screen and turn on. If the screen is ok the screen and green light will flash and then turn off. (if the screen doesn't flash the bottom screen is you're problem and will have to be replaced)

If this happens the problem is then you're top screen which you will have to replace.

My sons nintendo ds wont turn on, when we charge it, turn power on , the green light comes on and bottom screen blinks for a split second then goes dead.. Is this fixable , if so what do i try??? thanks

yes it is fixable sounds like your fault is with the top screen are the hinges ok has it been dropped.

most green light and screen flashes point to a defective screen or connection on the mother board or sometimes fuses. id start with checking the motherboard connection if its ok check the fuses if all is ok buy a new top screen and replace it.

DS lite green light comes on, top screen flash, then switches off

Check L2 near the power switch on your DS mobo. That part usually get loosen or taken out when you drop your DS. And usually you can recover it when dismantling your DS.
