Iomega large external hard drive doesn't show up on computer desktop. All cables, ports, power source, etc. tested (standard troubleshooting process and testing with other functioning external hard drives), all ok. Windows XP + SP3 operating system all updated and standard (Iomega drivers neither required nor available). Tried on two different laptops, one brand new. Iomega hard drive does received power properly - blue light turns on when power switch flipped on. Of course, the hardware was just out of warranty, about 4 months, when this happened. Well taken care of and infrequently used - though a lot of data is already stored on the drive. Mystery.

If the device doesn't show up in Mac System Profiler at all or as an unknown device:
The symptoms indicate there is a problem with the drive, how it is connected, or with the computer used for troubleshooting. The next best step is to change physical variables, and find a simpler problem than a broken product.

Change the data cable (USB, FireWire, Ethernet, etc.) A failure in the cable can cause this issue.
Change the external power supply or cable. If possible, obtain another power cabling to see if the problem is in that component. On drives that are powered via USB or Firewire, try using the included power sharing cable and connect it to another port.
Change the computer you are using. Computer problems can manifest themselves in many ways. Even if the computer appears to be working properly, this is a worthwhile test. Try it on a friend's computer and see if it works fine.

If the tests above don't help, it's possible that the drive was either dropped while running, had a hard drive 'head crash' or the circuitry inside the drive is fried.

Attach the cable from the external hard drive to an available usb port on your mini. Here is a link to the Guide provided with the unit if you do not have it. There should be a setup section. Use this drive to store all your pictures, music, documents etc.

Hello there,

What type of OS are you running ( Windows # )

What type of motherboard

Here is what i would do to start off with,

STEP ONE - Check all connections

Unplug the USB data cable from the drive and the computer.
Check the ends of the USB data cable to ensure that they are not damaged.
Reconnect the USB data cable to the drive and the computer. Check the connections to ensure that they are secure.

Note: If you have a Portable Hard Drive with a 2-line USB/power cable, connect both the data line and the supplemental power line (usually marked with a lightning bolt icon) to USB ports on the computer. If the status light on the drive glows steadily, the drive is receiving power. Go to step E.
If you are connecting an Iomega Desktop Hard Drive, check the power supply connections to the drive and power outlet to ensure that they are secure.
Restart the computer.
Double click the Computer or My Computer to see if the Iomega Hard Drive is detected.

If the Iomega Hard Drive is detected, you can now use the drive.

If the Iomega Hard Drive is not detected, please try another USB cable and/or power supply (if available). If the Iomega Hard Drive is still not detected, continue with the next step.

Iomega isn't recognized on computer. Blue light is flashing on unit as well.

You really need to provide more info. Basic Troubleshooting:

-Check all connections (Ethernet, Power, USB, etc)
-Install the appropriate driver for the device, usually included on a CD
-Double Check compatibility with your system (system requirements usually on packaging of product)
-If you haven't rebooted since you set it up, then reboot, this fixes a lot of things
-Try the product on another computer
-Try different cables/ports on the comptuer.

If nothing works, then send it in if it's under warranty or contact a professional service.

Does the drive show in Device Manager? Right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the open device manager.. Navigate down to Disk Drives or Hard Drives, click on the plus sign and see if your drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive name and open properties for the drive. Click on the 'Volumes' tab and hit the 'Populate Button'. It may be the disk just needs initialising, then reformatting before you can use it. If it does need initializing, a wizard should appear to guide you through the process!
If this doesn't solve your problem, try using a different USB cable and/or USB ports on your computer, and ensure to unplug all other USB devices other than keyboard & mouse.

just make sure both power and data cables are properly plugged and connected respectively. if you are using it with a desktop, please always plug your usb connection from the Iomega 1TB external drive to the rear USB port in line where you built-in LAN is.do not plug it in the frontload ports. some motherboard manufacturers uses usb 1 and/or 1.1 only for frontload desktop casing provision.

I plugged in an external hard drive into the USB ports and it does not show up in My Computer. I plugged an ipod into both ports and it showed up. The hard drive showed up once and then vanished. Help??

if this drive has 2 usb cables you need to connect both. one is for power other is for data. it may be also drive physical damage.

Well this is a tough one. I am assumeing that you have done all the normal things.
Most external hard drives are just a standard internal hard drive with a case and a IDE/SATA to USB adapter built in. When you plug in the drive and it powers up listen to the drive if you hear a clunk. Not a the happy ticking of a normal drive but a bad clunk. This can mean that the controller on the hard drive itself is bad.
If everything sounds happy then I would try replacing your power adapter. I know that the blue light goes on but most of that runs off the 5 volt leg of the power supply (I have has some hardware manufacturers actually pull the power light voltage from the USB port Grrr) most of the Large sized external hard drives use a 12 volt adapter and it can have no problem with the step down to 5 volt it may have a problem with the 12v.The 12v is what it uses to spin the drive. Unless you have one of those little drives. They use a laptop hard drive that works of a lower voltage. Most of the time you can get an adapter from Radio Shack. Be sure to bring the old one so they can get the Volts, amps, poleartity and the type of connector. It is worth a try and keep the reciept. If it is just bad I am sorry but the only way to get the data off is to break into the unit and pull the hard drive out. Then use another USB to IDE/SATA adapter to pull the data off.
