If your external harddrive came with software, you may want to reinstall it. If not you may have to go the the website for the Maxtor One Touch 3 and download the driver for the unit.
You may also want to open the device manager and check to see if your usb port is having trouble. More than likely it is the driver itself>
I have one as well running along with a PC. PCs and Macs are formatted differently. Go to www.maxtor.com and create a search for reformatting from a Mac to a PC with your Operating System in the search as well. Should have no problems after doing that. It will tell you and or show you where and how to reformat.
I have a Maxtor Ext HD myself. Maxtor has a website. Try www.maxtor.com or Google it and you will find their web site. Then search for your HD and do a search for the download of the drivers needed for your HD
