43'' HD projection philips tv color change

I have a 43'' HD projection philips tv and the right and left side of the tv seem to be more of a yellow when on a all white picture and more green when on a all blue picture. It is not very obvious until you start thinking about it. Is this something important and what does it mean?

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Red images with green projected to the right with a green halo on upper and lower left corners

This set needs a fluid change. Between the face of the picture tubes and projection lens there is a layer of coolant fluid. The fluid has turned a milky brown color and is degrading the picture. The tubes have to be removed in order to do this properly. I would suggest you contact a repair shop and have them check it out for you as this can be very complicated. Thanks for using fixya and I hope this helps you out.

Getting the VCR to play through the old Philips TV

Hi,
Looks as if you were using the AV cable to connect the VCR to TV. The three colored cables should be connected in the following order:
Yellow: From VCR Video out to TV Video In
Red : VCR Audio out (right) to TV audio in (right)
White: From VCR Audio out (left) to TV audio in (left)

Also check the color on the sockets on TV and VCR and match accordingly.

Hope this solves your problem. Thanks

Adjusting to the proper color

Tint would be the control that will control the color balance, but this sounds like it may be deeper then that. Turn your color all the way down so that you have a black and whit picture. If the picture is still yellow then you have a problem with the blue picture tube.

Color convergence on our Phillips 46999302/17F

If you are not able to adjust the convergence using the remote you need to replace the convergence chips.

Typical Symptoms

1) Convergence menu does not work for one or more colors.
Example: RED moves up,down, but left or right fails.

2) Screen is bowed looking.

If you have one or more of the problems above you need to replace the convergence chips. You can get a kit and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com
