I purchased a vintage Singer Stylist 457 yesterday with sewing table. I tried it this morning & it sewed for a few minutes then the treads gathered in the stitching, the machine made a clunk noise and now the whole bobbin unit does not move even when turned by hand. I've looked at a couple of forums & gears are mentioned but I'd appreciate if anyone has any ideas what it could be and how much it is likely to cost to repair? Many thanks in advance, Sharon.

Constant bunching of fabric when back stitching is making sewing very frustrating for me, especially at the beginning and ending of seam when chain piecing. What can I do to eliminate this problem?

I was sewing and I hit one of the pins that was holding the material in place and broke the pin. I got the pin out of the bobbin area. Now the needle will not work.

My Pfaff sewing machine has a new problem. The display is lighted when it is turned on, but a straight line is briefly displayed, then nothing. I can sew, move the needle, change stitch size (all by memory) and wind the bobbin. The needle down position also works, just not the display. Ruth Hollis

How do I correct stitch length mechanism to produce 6 stitches per inch?

the stitch length is governed by the cam action connected to the walking foot
that means that the stitch length is governed by the amount of material that is pulled through in the period of time that the needle comes up and goes down
normally the cam action is set by the stitch length lever/ reverse lever
if there is a necessity for a longer stitch, the cam would have to be changed on the drive shaft underneath
That will require a discussion with a sewing machine mechanic to determine if there are cams or other linkages that can be fitted to alter the stitch length for the manufactured maximum

My sewing machine wont RUN. The needle goes up and down but the material wont move along.

under the foot around the needle, there should be two rows of what look like teeth, these pull the material through and there will be an adjustment mechanism on the machine. Try leaving the foot up while you run the machine, you should see the teeth going up and down; if they are it is most likely just a case of setting up the amount of pull. I think it is adjusted with the wheel that sets the length of stitch.

The bottom stitching looks like a line and not stitches the top stitching is fine

try adjusting the top thread tension and see if that helps
also try changing the thread.
also change the needle--make sure it's the right needle for the fabric
being sewed.

The needle on my sewing machine will not move up and down, the handwheel is a little tight and the bobbin winder wont move, how do I fix this?

You are jammed up with thread or material. Clean it out, rethread, wind a new bobbin. Oil your machine and put in a new needle. When you sew, hold the thread ends when you first start out sewing for about 4-5 stitches. Read your manual, watch your dvd on instructions

Does it make a difference whether I use a 14 or 16 in my Kenmore sewing machine, basic 12 stitch. I had a 16 needle in it but after my friend cleaned it, in trying it, the needle hit the presser foot>...

Hi. You use different size needles for different fabrics and fabric weights. Size 16 needles are used for heavy fabric, like canvas, duck, or blue jeans. Size 14 needles are still on the heavy/thick fabric size. Size 10 needles are for very light-weight fabrics and size 12 needles are for medium-weight fabrics. Also, you need to pay attention to the type of fabric--if sewing on knits, you need ballpoint needles. If sewing on woven fabrics, you need sharps or universals. Universals are supposed to be for knits, too....but ballpoint needles are SO much better!
Use the right size and type of needle for your fabric, don't sew over any pins (they can bend or even break the needle), and make sure you don't pull or push the fabric while you're sewing on it. Let the feed dogs do the work of moving the fabric--you just gently guide it.
Hope this helps!

Sounds like your machine is in need of a good cleaning and oiling. If you aren't handy with taking apart things and getting them back together I suggest taking it to a sewing machine repair place. In the meantime you can try oiling any spots you can access. Use sewing machine oil, found at any sewing/fabric store and even most Wal-Marts.

Sewing machine straight stitch is not straight

It sounds like it is making a blind stitch, does it look something like this? -----v-----v-----v-----v-----v If so it might be on the blind stitch setting instead of the straight stitch! ;-)
