Problem open up my maxtor one touch 500gb to retieve photos

I have a maxtor one touch 500g and cannot seem to sort out the problem. The maxtor information shows up on my laptop, but will not open up. I have lots of photos and information on and would love to know how I can retrieve that info. What do I do here?

I've tried hooking the Maxtor up to another computer, no result. It shows that it is there, but I cannot open the hard drive to view anything. My Maxtor just stoped working for no reason.

First, recover your files. You will need to use hard drive deleted photo recovery program like Asoftech Photo Recovery, you can follow this video to recover deleted photo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNxApz_PBW8

I've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.

After you get back your files, you can then format the drive and reinstall your system.

Try connecting it to another computer. If you can open up the Maxtor on this computer then backup your data.
Then connect the Maxtor to your laptop and format the Maxtor, it should return to normal unless it is faulty.
NOTE formatting the Maxtor will delete your files.

The Maxtor adapter case could be faulty. try removing the hard drive from the case and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and then connect it to a working computer. If you are lucky you maybe able to retrieve your files, if not you are out of luck.

There are companies that can retrieve data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I have a maxtor 500g external hard drive that indicates i/o erro, how can I fix this

I/O errors can be caused by a number of things. First, perform a file system check (Linux FSCK or Windows CHKDSK). Second, swap the SATA or USB cable. Third, you can use smartmontools to check the SMART data. If there are too many reallocated sector errors this could mean that the drive is going to fail, or is failing right now. If the drive fails the SMART status, check the warranty status at seagate's website:

Can't open Maxtor one touch 4 mini

If the external hard disks is plugged to a USB port and is not detected anymore, try uninstalling the USB Root Hub devices in the device manager. They will automatically be reinstalled on reboot and that can help fix detection issues.

But did you look in the Disk Management module of Windows to see if the disk is there? Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

I have maxtor basic 500G ex works fine when I plug into old laptop with XP, but when I plug in to new laptop with Windows 7 it says I have to format drive..Why is this?

Try opening the device manager and changing device removal policy to "Better Performance" (remember to always safely remove the device afterwards or you'll likely lose data).

Also, verify that the partition type is recognized in Local Computer > Drive Management and the drive letter doesn't conflict with anything else.

In XP and Vista no need to install.
They will detect automatically.
To know, goto Windows explorer.

Maxtor one touch III 500g, got knocked over and now when its switched on it just beeps at me, and nothing appears to happen. I can't see any damage but it's certainly not working.

First things first;
hello
1) verify the connection
2) you have to change the Disk on another USB port 2.0
3) if you got warranty I suggest you change the device.** if apply.
good luck
