Hello!
Just wondering if there is a way out of this problem. I have a computer sitting here and no restore CDs. I've heard that there is a bootup keypress that will lead to a system restore, using restore files on a partition of the HD.
Again, I don't have the cds.
Tried to install XP using a regular XP Home disk, but the drivers I downloaded from Emachines for this model don't want to work! Could this be because of differences with XP HOme and XP Home "Nettops"?
Thank you,
Tim

I have no idea about the difference between XP Home and "Nettops", lol! But, I can help you restore :)
Reboot your PC, when the very first screen comes up (the manufacturer's screen, the one before the Windows splash) press and hold F8 (or tap repeatedly). This will take you to a boot-options menu. Choose "Boot in Safe Mode", allow windows to load.
When it is finished loading, you may be given an automatic choice of either running System Restore, or finish loading in Safe Mode. Choose System Restore, and restore to a date (on the little calander) sometime before your issues came up.
If you are not prompted automatically, and instead it loads to the desktop, go to Start Button ---> Help and Support ---> and under "Pick a Task" choose "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore". Again, pick a date and let 'er rip!
(you can also find it in Start Button ---> Programs ---> Accessories ---> System Tools ---> System Restore)
*****If you are not having problems with your boot, and simply want to restore, you can skip the F8 way and just go straight to restore from your normal desktop!
Whew! Hope some of this helps!
If you need any further assistance, please feel free to post a comment to this post and I will be glad to help!

I did do this but the pc will not boot up just keeps going to the safe mode screen.
If you don't see a message like "press F11 for system restore" then you're mostly out of luck with the restore partition. Since you already reinstalled XP using a regular disk (yes, that works just fine), then you are probably using the wrong drivers from E-Machine.
I've done the same thing and it works just fine.
If worst comes to worst, you can order restore CDs from the company.
