I have a Craftsman model 919.166330 compressor. When I turn on the switch it runs for about 5 to 10 seconds and begins to slow down until it stops and hums.

Check the check valve, disconnect the tube between the pump and the tank and power it up and see if it still humms.

SOURCE: whirl pool side by side refrigerator problem

It looks like the Capacitor Start Relay is failing.  It is located either on the starter Relay or mounted on the side of the compressor compartment.  It sould have two wires on it, one orange and the other probably white.

SOURCE: compressor hums and shuts off

This sounds very much like a compressor failure. unplug the refrigerator and check the condenser for cleanliness. After cleaning the condenser and allowing the compressor to cool, plug it back in and listen for the same sounds. If the compressor was overheated it should restart after it cools. If it does not restart the compressor could be seized. Check the compressor warranty against the age of the refrigerator.

It is definitely with the compressor. It should more like you may have a weak winding in the compressor, you can a hard start capacitor (sp5 ) that will help the compressor on restart. Note that this is a last chance solution for a compressor.

SOURCE: Sears Craftsman 3-Gallon, 1.5 HP Air Compressor Hums

YES IT MAY BE THE CAPACITOR . IT COULD ALSO BE THE WIREING IN THE MTR, THE PUNP ITSELF.

SOURCE: Machine slows down, stops, starts again. Foot control problem?

Yes it does sound like a faulty foot control. The power cord is probably fine, you just need the controller. Ebay is a good source for parts.

My Craftsman model 919.165230 air compressor trips the breaker after initial fill on restart. No air leakage from anywhere, if I empty tank and restart it works fine until it restarts.

Either the unloader valve on the pressure switch is bad or the extension cord is too long or the start capacitor is weak.
When the tank is full, unplug and try to turn by hand a few turns.
Air should come out the unloader valve drain fitting.

Problem with the craftsman 30 gal compressor 6 hp vertical oil free. motor or compressor will not engage, when turned motor starts for a second and sound slow then pops the breaker

Take the shroud off and check the plastic cover on the end of the motor. It has a tendency to crack the two mounting tabs off and then hang loose. When this happens the start and run capacitor switch disengages and will not let the compressor start and run until the switch is in the correct location. Get some longer screws and a flat strap to hold the cover on securely and it will run.

Compressor fly wheel not hung up unit starts operation soon fly wheel starts to slow down like it is laboring then stops and motor overloads and trips protection switch

It sounds like the unloader valve it not working correctly. The unloader valve bleeds off the pressure between the pump head and the tank check valve. Without it every time the compressor starts the piston would be working against the max tank pressure. This would cause what your describing. However when the unloader valve is not working the pump will shut off with in a couple seconds. If your pump is working longer then that I would guess that the unloader valve may be bleeding off some but not all the pressure.

On most smaller craftsman compressors the unloader valve is comprised of a piece of tubing running from the cylinder head or the check valve to the switch. At the switch you will see a plastic tip with a pin running to a small trip lever. Make sure that it's moving freely and moving through it's full range of motion. It's impossible to describe how this looks and feels to someone who has never messed with one of these.
After you have checked it and made sure it's working, if you still has trouble after this please let me know.

Craftsman compressor won't cycle off

Hi, First, I think the cutoff pressure is 135psi and there is an overpressure valve so let it run a little longer. I don't know exactly which model you have ( some of these were oil less) but if it is running longer than you remember, be sure to check the oil if necessary, make sure you are not using a long extension as this will cause the motor to slow down and definitely check to make sure the water is drained and the drain petcock is closed all the way. Also check it without an air hose attached. Good Luck!

Fan works for about ten minutes then begins to slow down

Try spraying some WD-40 or similar on the motor shaft. There is probably some buildup of contaminents gumming up the bearings.

If I knew what country you lived in, I might be able to tell you where you can buy the motor if you need it.
