Trying to burn some files to a memorex cd-rw. no computer will recognize that a cd is in the cd drive, even though one is in there. might be a formatting issue, but can't get any software to recognize cd,...

You might want to try the nero lite software. Most of these so called softwares do not reconize some burners. There is a site that tells you these problems. Try to google your (lets say hp cd) and then say EX: hp cd drive (try to use a model)..+not recognizing my burner, don't use spaces in the query.
Nero is a good burning software that enables most burners to be recognized.
If you have had Roxio .. this software is not very friendly to some of the burners out there. If you have this software get rid of it, uless you have the original disk or it come with oem on the restore disc.
PS Use Nero Lite it works the berries!

Nero express 5.5.9.9

Hi

Maybe you have some other writing software installed that stops nero seeing your drives. Uninstall that software and reinstall nero.

Problems recording DVD-R 16X

Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.
