Connect broken laptop screen to external monitor

My laptop (HP Pavillion DV6000) is screen broken. I detached power and data from broken laptop screen and connected to the external monitor vga port. The external monitor is black with the cursor visible. I tried fn + f4 and nothing. How can I get the external monitor to act as the laptop screen. The screen was shot by a BB and is completley broken.

Suggestion- on my toshiba fn-f5 switches display modes, but to remove display connectors, you may have messed up your keyboard ribbon cable connection. it probably has a small sliding lock to hold it in place- if the lock isn't tight, your keyboard may not be recognized, which could mess up your display. Also, make sure your battery is charged and/or your power supply to your laptop is connected. hope this helps!

I would back mothmans answer 100% but might suggest you re-assemble the display to the laptop if you continue to have problems getting an external display going.

Screen broken

Yes you can.
Connecting an External Monitor or Data Projector
You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

I a having a laptop-HP pavillion dv6000,RAM 1gb and OS-32bit with window 7 ultimate,a problem of colourisation.i mean the display colour has change like a spray a of colours(green,deep blue)on the normal...

Try plugging in an external monitor and see how the display shows on it. If the display is ok on the external then your LCD Screen is going bad. If it shows the same colors on the external monitor then your video graphics card has issues.

My hp pavillion dv6000 works but , no light up screen . any suggestions?

If there is an image on the screen, but it is incredibly dark and washed out, then your laptop's back light is out. This is an expensive repair that often exceeds $300. Solutions can be having it repaired, getting it replaced, or using an external monitor with the laptop.

My hp pavillion dv9000 turns on but the screen stays black like it isnt getting any power to it

Connect your laptop up to an external monitor. If you get a picture on the external monitor then you know that your Chip is fine. At that point You will need to replace the screen.

Hi, I have an HP pavillion dv6000 and the problem is that it doesn't start, i have just bought a new ram, but it still doesnt start, can you please help thanks

These Laptops have an inherent problem with the Video chip. If the computer is powering on but you are not seeing a video on the screen, try using an external monitor on the laptop vga port. If you can get a picture on the external monitor, you have an issue with your screen, and it needs changing. If you cannot get a picture on the external monitor, your video chip is bad and the laptop is finished. Reflowing the graphic chip is usually useless.

Good Luck
