Light is on but no one is home.

Hi,
My WD 1TB EHD has been working fine for months but recenently has my PC won't recognise it. The blue light is on (it used to flash when it was working properly and had 3 sections in a bar but now its just the centre bar thats on without blinking), and I can hear it spinning inside but it wont come up on any of my USB ports. I run Windows XP. Is it all over and I should throw the peice of junk against the wall or is there still hope?

Ok, I tested the USB ports and USB cable with other devices and everything seemed to work fine. I cleaned the USB port on the EHD too. As soon as I plugged it in to my PC the light on the EHD started to flash like its meant to and my PC also started to make the same noise it does when its reading something. But then nothing... Still couldn't read the EHD. Everytime I pug in the EHD, my PC makes the USB device connection noise and the same noise when I disconnect it but it doesnt appear in the "Safely Remove Hardware" section. I've also looked in the device manager under System in Control Panel. WD is listed in my disk drives section but when I looked at the properties of it it couldn't give any real info and said it was at location 0 ...
Is there anything else I can try before I attempt to "fix" it with a hammer?

"remove the raw drive from the casing
if its a sata connect it directly to your pc using a power cable for sata drive and a data cable and connect it to the mother board" ...

Did all that and still nothing comes up. How do I fix the firmware?

Please don't throw it.U You can try cleaning and removing dust on the USB port, see if it helps. and also wipe out dust on the usb on the EHD

Please remove the raw drive from the casing
if its a sata connect it directly to your pc using a power cable for sata drive and a data cable and connect it to the mother board
i am sure it would detect your drive
if no then your drive has lost its firm ware ata module or the rom bin file

if you know how to fix firmware the drive can be up again
pm me if you cant solve your problem

Hi, my ps3 won't recognise my 1tb wd external hard

The problem with the new 1Tb WD Passport that I just purchased is that it is a USB 3.0 format and apparently PS3 doesn't recognize that speed.

Haven't found a workaround for it yet, but all these people advising you to reormat anew Passport drive are wasting your time.

Hi there, I'm using a WD drive with a Macintosh. It accidently became unplugged, or partially so, when my young son brushed up against the plug. Since then it won't mount and there white light on...

Ouch. The blinking light is bad. But try this:

1. Run the WD discover tool
2. Go to "configure" and acknowledge there is a blinking light. This might give you access to the data and drives.
3. If the status says "good" then everything is fine. If not, then you probably have a bad drive and need to contact WD tech support. Hopefully you still have a warranty for it if this is the case.

Let me know if this works!

USB Connection failed? (WD 1tb My Book Essential 2.0)

Your HD may have died. This is actually a common occurrence with some external enclosures with WD hard drives installed (just do a Google search, you might be surprised how many people have had the same problem as you describe...)
Your actual HD may have SATA connections (but connects to a SATA-to-USB controller). Some people have claimed that removing the drive from the enclosure and connecting directly to SATA port on motherboard yielded a successful connection.
I wouldn't recommend this, as your drive may still be under warranty and might qualify for a free or low-cost replacement.
Your USB is likely working fine. However, the drive will not show up if it is dead. I encountered a similar issue with a WD external HD recently. USB connection gives the sense that "something" might be working, but if your drive isn't seen under disk management, there's a good chance that it may have failed.
Hopefully you have your sensitive data backed up.
Good Luck!

WD mybook 1TB is gone from the network

Have you tried different cables or a different port on your router. Is there any way to get into the Hard Drive by connecting it directly to a PC and checking the network settings or anything..? If not, then you may have to connect it directly to a PC and share it to your other PC's.

WD 1TB USB 2.0 EXT HD - NOT RECOGNIZED

Hi First things first, is the light on the front still coming on? If not try a new power supply or moving the drive to a new shell as the problem is either in the AC adapter or in the shell.

If the light is on it only confirms that you have power, but first try a different set of USB ports and if that doesn't work try a different computer. If it works on the other ports, no biggy, use it there. If it doesn't and works on a different computer then it's likely your registry entry for the device is damaged, get back to me if that is the case. If it doesn't work on other ports or another computer then it's likely the circuitry of either the drive or shell is damaged, take it to a computer store and have the techs swap it into a new shell(about $40). Then have them test it, if it works you're done, if not then it is the circuitry in the drive itself that is damaged and you will need to send it for data recovery if you want the files back.

Send me an update once you have tried these suggestions and let me know how you made out. If you require the help of a pro for the final steps, reply with your country and region and I will locate a reputable facility to assist you further.

Flashing blue light on external WD hard drive & not recognised

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

Hd only switches on briefly the shuts it's self down

If it has another connector type ie firewire or usb ( the opposite of what you are using ) then try that.

If its usb then you can go into device manager and un install the usb hub under usb devices etc and re install your motherboard drivers and re connect the hard drive also if you have a laptop or a friends computer you can connect it to temporarily to install it on just to see if it works on there computer - if it does then that means the hard drive is fine if not then it points at the hard drive.
