Try forcing an application to close
To force an application to close, follow these steps:
iPhone or iPod touch running iPhone OS 3.0 or later
iPhone or iPod touch running iPhone OS 2.2.1 or earlier
If the iPhone or iPod touch remains unresponsive, try restarting the device:
Restarting iPhone or iPod touch
If the iPhone or iPod touch remains unresponsive after trying the above steps or if it is in a different state, such as showing a persistent Apple logo on the display, try resetting the device:
Resetting the iPhone or iPod touch
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds.

I would connect iphone to cpu with itunes then hold sleep/ wake and home button for a full 2 mins - if you dont see the apple the ipod is dead you need to call apple for replacement

One of the recommendations in the manual if your iphone does not start is to push both the sleep button {located at the top of the phone} as well as the home button {the buttom as the lower end of the phone. That should do a cold restart for the phone and get it to work. Hope this information is of some help...
