There are 2 ways for you to solve this kind of issue. You can find some other free players such as Media Player Classic, Leawo Blu-ray Player, VLC (you may need to import codec) and so on.
Method 1: Play AVI in QuickTime-Install Perian Plugin
Perian is a handy free program that allows your Mac to play almost any movie format including AVI files. Installing video file add-on software will let the Mac's QuickTime player play AVI movie files on Mac as easily as it does the native QuickTime video format. In fact it claims to play all the following movie formats: AVI, DIVX, FLV, MKV, GVI, VP6, and VFW, MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivx, H.264, Sorenson H.263, FLV/Sorenson Spark, FSV1, VP6, H263i, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Snow, NuppelVideo, Techsmith Screen Capture and DosBox Capture.
Method 2: Play AVI files on VLC on Mac OS X
The VLC media player, is an excellent open-source media player that is known for supporting a wide range of audio and video files. Unlike other media players which have limited format-support, you will be surprised that VLC can play a video or audio file that you didn't even know existed. If your OS is Snow Leopard or higher, installing VLC is definitely a good choice especially if you only plan on watching AVI files on your computer. This disadvantages are as follows: VLC doesn't play AVI files with high qualities, VLC doesn't support El Capitan.
Hi Kaygee1986 !!
Thank you for posting to Fixya.com
This is a general problem & you can download the VLC Player from the internet, which is available for free & install it on your computer. Once you have installed the VLC player, Right click on the AVI file & choose 'Open With', then select the VLC player. That's it.
Here's the link to download the VLC player:

Hope this would be helpful.
