Hello friend, I appreciate your post!
I see you're getting brown stains on some of your loads of laundry within your Frigidaire washer. I have completed some research in regards to brown stains and that could be iron or manganese in the water supply, water pipes, or water heater. In order to restore discolored loads try a rust remover safe for fabric. Do not use chlorine bleach to remove these stains as it may intensify discoloration. I hope this is helpful. -Matt

Maytag top loader, appx 20 years old, city water, Tide powder most of the time. Thought the Downey might be causing it, but it's not - stains continue to appear even without the use of the softener. I normally use Clorox in my white loads, and that doesn't seem to stop the stains from appearing either.
The tub itself looks fine, but I haven't done a thorough inspection. Yes, the stains are grayish - as mentioned, on a white shirt it almost looks like shadows. The tub fills and empties fine, no problems with the agitator, but I haven't taken it apart to check for corrosion or anything inside yet. Didn't know what to look for, as the machine works fine otherwise. This has been going on for about a year or so. Maybe it's time for someone to come out and give it a "tune up" and clean the thing out for me. thanks, at least you've given me something to look for.
Sorry I couldn't give you a definite fix. Good luck on finding the culprite!
How?s the tub? Any worn away areas where the metal is showing through the porcelain? What color are the stains? I'm assuming gray or silvery. Is the tub filling completely? Should be enough water for the clothes to move about freely when being agitated. Being a 20 year old machine, there is the possibility of built up ?crude? in places not normally seen but that clothes or water could come in contact with, or some small object could be trapped that is corroding and releasing particles that stain, aluminum is really bad for imparting a stain. Can you take the plastic agitator out? Check for corrosion under it on the shaft housing. Good time to clean under there, too. How long ago did this start?
Water source? well or city, type of washer? Detergent used?
