Developed and designed by Microsoft, Windows Media player (WMP) is an amazing application that is used for playing video or sound as well as viewing images in your computer running Microsoft Windows Operating System, Pocket PC and Windows mobile-based devices. This application also has had editions for Mac OS X, Solaris and Classic Mac OS, but they are discontinued. Windows Media player supports different kinds of file formats in audio and video media, including WMV, WMX, WAX, Windows Media Metafiles, AIFF, Windows media audio and video files, AVI, MPEG, MIDI, MP3, DVD video, CD audio track and UNIX.

You can check the supported formats above and download codec accordingly.

Windows Media Player is a popular player developed by Microsoft company, but actually it cannot play all file types. For example, it fails to support h.264, h.265 (popular video codecs on YouTube), dvd media, iso, vob, vcd (windows media player doesn't play DVD), mkv (attached support on Windows 10), rmvb, rm, swf, webm, etc. So you may run into troubles when playing such non-supported files with Windows Media Player. That's why you need a codec pack for Windows Media Player.
Where to Download Windows Media Player Codec Pack?
1. CCCP
2. Media Player Codec Pack.
3. XP Codec Pack.
4. K-Lite Codec Pack.

Windows media players seem to have a prob. with having all the codec you might need to play a movie. ...even after you install more codec. ....go to the site for VLC media player and download it and you it as a default player. ....vlc media player has all the codec's in it that you would ever come accross. ....works great for me and has never found a movie it could not play

I have an .avi file dvd rip xvid that dont play and when i open it,the message reads"plase ensure windows media player is upto date.please visit www.dbmovies.info to get the db codec".

The video file you have might be encoded with a codec you don't have installed.
There are codec packs which cover the most of them, so that media players can play videos.
You can try downloading the most popular I know, k-lite codec pack from here. And try to play the video again.

If you don't want to mess with codecs and stuff, you can always try downloading vlc media player, that plays nearly anything without the need of separate codecs.

Cant watch a dvd using windows media player, i can hear the audio but no video

This is typically caused by not having the correct codec required for the video. You can get free codecs like ffdshow at sites like this: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ffdshow.htm

I suggest you download and install VLC Media player instead of using windows media player. VLC is capable of playing all sort of media format.

That the windows media player is unable to paly some movies it show the message wvc1 codec is required to paly this file.

You need CODECS for some DIVX files.

Use other media players like Media Player Classic instead.

I only get sound when using windows media player, no video, help please?

The problem is definitely the codecs you have installed.

Try a player that does not need codecs to be installed (has codecs packed inside its core) like KMPlayer, VLCPlayer, mPlayer etc.

If these players work then I suggest you stick with them, they are way better than Windows Media Player.

Still if they work and you love Windows Media Player then I suggest to uninstall the codecs pack you installer (ACE / K-Lite / etc) and reinstall the latest version of K-Lite codecs (my personal recommendation; still, I go with KMPlayer and need no codecs installed).

If none of the above codec-less players work then you have an overlay problem (while playing a video the player defines a color that will be used by the player itself as the canvas for drawing the movie directly). TRY REINSTALLING YOUR VIDEO CARD DRIVER, this might help if nothing from above works.

Windows media has sound no visual when playing

Your media player might be having problems getting the video feed from the USB. try copying the file to your local disk and play the movie from there.
