My Family Tree designer software and VIsta OS

My Family Tree designer software purchased a few years ago for use with Windows 95 does not work on my new laptop (Vista OS). Is there an upgrade/corrective available ?

I checked the Cosmi website and could find no newer versions.

I would suggest you go with this newer version of Family Tree Maker.

http://www.familytreemaker.com/About/Default.aspx

It is quite extensive. Lots of features. Also, it is associated with ancestry.com. On-line tutorials are provided. Reasonably priced too.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Is sierra easy family tree for windows 95/98 compatible with windows 7? I have no problem with windows xp.

It probably will not work on win 7
If it will install you can try to run in compatibility mode by right clicking on the install after installing and clicking troubleshooting compatibility and adjusting the settings in the new box that will pop up

Register it again. Even trough you already did this, porting the software from its program files folder does not always works fine. Windows' register has these registration saved, and your new PC doesn't.

The error may be with the file or the software you are using to open it. Try download a fresh copy of adobe reader and try copying the file again and opening it again.

I have 'generations' family tree software from Cendant I have 'vista' but it won't work. What can I do?

You can right click the program and try troubleshooting compatability. otherwise it wont work with vista. To be honest, Vista is the worst OS ever. Upgrade to windows 7

Trying to import easy family tree version 5 with all my research included to vista---vista does not recognize and will not open the program.

I have the same problem. I have Windows 7 which is 64 bit and Easy Family Tree is 32 bit and it will not load. I love this program and do not want to switch. Is there anyway to install it and transfer my info?

Can not determine if this program will run on Windows Vista 64bit

Sounds like Compatibility Mode may help.

To configure the compatibility mode for an application, just locate the installation directory and right click on the .exe, selecting Properties from the menu.
Select the Compatibility tab:
You can choose to run the program in Windows XP compatibility mode, or even all the way back to Windows 95 compatibility.
Probably the most useful setting to start off with would be to disable the visual themes and desktop composition, if you can't get things working. If you are trying to run a video game, you will often need to choose "Run this program as an administrator". You'll have to play around with it, but most likely you can get your application working this way.

Good Luck
