Right there in your serial number: 022704 - your mower was built feb. 27, 2004 -- first make sure it's the steering column that has frozen. more often than not, it's the front spindles that freeze up. very rarely, the pinion and bevel gear will freeze. to get parts, you'll need the MODEL NUMBER. keep in mind that this is not an easy repair. check everything over before you take it apart, a digital camera can be quite a lifesaver

Should steering column rattle?
If possible, look at the steering column, there should be some bushings or collars that help support it. One is usually towards the bottom near where it ties into a steering gear. There may be another half way up the column and at the top of the column.
Some also have a bolt and collar at the bottom to keep the column from lifting upward.

Hi Joan, how about year--make--model? Most problems are in the steering column, but, you still need to check the wiring circuits, I can't track anything without year--make--model.

If the problem is in the steering column and the steering wheel has an airbag, you need to disable that before working on the steering column.

What happens when you turn right? Does it turn as sharp as it used to? Almost sounds like the steering gear teeth have slipped and now it is steering to far to the left. You'll have to check the steering sector gears at the bottom of the steering column.

should be an metal arm under the front of the mower with a swivel ball on each end, if the ball has popped out of the socket it sits in you will need a new arm or maybe 2 new ball swivels, the actual balls are held onto the steering arm by a nut which you can undo to remove the old ball and replace it with the new ones
