Start the automatic clean function. Using the menu function and arrow keys again, locate “Clean the Print Cartridges” on the LCD screen
Wait while the function cleans the cartridge. The carriage that holds the cartridge will move during the cleaning.
Start the second level of cleaning.Click your “OK” button.
As long as the test page is clean, you can cancel out of the cleaning function and begin sending print jobs to the printer again...

This is common problem with Brother Printers. I am going to assume you are using Non-Brother branded ink cartridges. Brother cartridges have a cleanser in the ink that most generic cartridges don't have. This in turn causes the jets to clog and not allow ink to pass through them. The fix is to go buy a couple of Brother cartridges and do a cleaning with those cartridges. You may spend some money doing this as a cleaning wastes a lot of ink, but it will clean the injection lines and fix the printer. You could also consider buying a new printer. I know this is not the answer you were looking for, but it is the true answer. I just bought a new printer due to this fact.

In case of a problem or clarification or my solution was insufficient, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

Well to tell you the truth - if you didnt use Quality INK FROM THEM - IT PROBABLY KILLED the print head. which happens.
if you did buy their ink - then its still most likely a print head gone bad. they do need to be cleaned from time to time.
if the print head in on the cartridge itself then they might be a bad batch. I couldnt tell from the pictures of the ink cartridges i found. but check this forumn out. they had a good DO IT YOURSELF remedy that they said worked. http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/55199
at the bottom of this next page is how to make sure you reinstall them properly. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00064417&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=64992
thats from HP's website. so. looked easy to do - although cleaning them yourself will save time and lots of money as i found out that its $125 for all new print heads. so if you got the money i recommend buying them - if you got the time -- "I MYSELF would try the first remedy and follow the install instructions."
Hope this Helped x404x

Printer will not print red. The red cartridge seems fine, with ink flowing freely, but it won't print onto the page.

its the problem of print head in your printer. You are not the only one facing this problem there are many other users facing this same problem.in canon printer users out of 10 users ---- 8 users face this problem.
Now I will explain the problem
In the printer where you insert the cartridges is called carriage.in the carriage there is a part called PRINT HEAD. In the print head there are tiny – tiny holes from where the ink passes.when you insert the cartridge in the carriage /head of the printer the ink from the cartridge passes from the head.but if the head is got blocked then the ink will not pass from the head and you get no print out still with the new brand cartridges.now in the printer there is a in built cleaning assembly , so when you give the command of cleaning from your pc/laptop the inbuilt cleaning assembly tries to clean the blocked ink in the tiny holes of the head.but if the ink is got stuck up hard the cleaning assembly in the printer does not have that much power to clean the ink in the head.the other procedure to clean the head is a manual cleaning.in this procedure the head needs to be removed from the printer by disassembling the printer.but in this case out of 100 only 4 to 5 heads gets cleaned and start working but that also don’t last long.its not any guarantee that how much the manually cleaned head will work.
In some cases it has been seen that ink gets used only in cleaning but after inserting new cartridges the printer starts working.if you have inserted new cartridges in the printer and still don’t get any printout then its advisable that you go for any other brand printer.hp is the best brand of printer. Or the other option is you take the printer to local printer repair shop to get the head manually cleaned if you at present don’t want to invest in new printer.a repair center have some special tools to clean the print head its 50 ---- 50 Chance.you can try that first.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Dx4800 printing black lines over ordinary print. tried cleaning heads etc and put new cartridges in.

Are you Using Genuine Epson Ink Cartirdges?//???

Hello, In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4800, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. That sounds like your problem. Also in Purchasing the Brother's . Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, etc. These printers have a chip, that will detect if it is Generic or Genunie. When using Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors.

That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, but you have to fill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. Don’t waste too much ink in cleaning it.

This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.

Thanks and Good Luck :0)

When i finish printing it sounds like it is cleaning the print heads. this is n ew I ordered direct and I have only had it two weeks and it is low on ink and I have scarcely used it

Welcome to the world of ink cartridges and ink use.

You may not believe you used that much ink but you have.

Starter cartridges are not necessarily full cartridge loads. However, if you purchase new ink cartridges from your printer's manufacturer, they will be full.

I've done some pictures that were son intensely busy that they killed a cartridge on the first run. Use is determined by the document and not how long you used the cartridge.

White lines through color picture printouts (not with B&W)

Some of the ink nozzles are clogged. Try running the "Deep Clean" from the maintenance section of the printer software. You can also try to physically clean the nozzles. Take a lint free cloth and dampen it under warm water. Then remove the cartridge and lightly clean the cartridge nozzles.

If you are using third party cartridges or refilled ink that can easily be the cause of the problems your printer is having.

Try opening the printer properties and cleaning the print heads (should probably be done each time a cartridge is changed), it uses some ink up but should clean the build up from running the previous cartridge dry and hopefully solve your printing problem.

Good luck.

Simply run a few cleaning cycles....

5-6...make sure you don;t run out of ink after the cleaning cycles as you heads can be damaged if you try to print without ink.
