Make sure the RAM is good, and google it to see if the motherboard supports it. Also, make sure the slots are clean and the RAM sticks are also clean. You may even clean the pins of the sticks using a cotton cloth and alcohol. Sometimes dust and fingerprints on the contacts can cause the RAM not to be recognized by the motherboard. As I remember, the BX motherboards are quite old so probably the RAM slots are full of dust, and you'll need to clean them up either with a vacuum cleaner or a brush of some kind.

It looks like you have a good candidate for a gaming pc, in my opinion. I would suggest that you upgrade the memory to its max of 4 GB. Recheck data cable for wear & power cable for a possible short. If possible use another power connector within the system.

I had the same problem and ASUS tech support was of no help. I did however find the culpret in the BIOS setup. Go to Advanced, Chipset, NorthBridge Chipset, and Memory Configuration. Set the Bank Interleaving to Disabled and save the settings. Check these settings also while you are there:
Channel Interleaving = Auto
Enable clock to all DIMMS = Disabled
Memory Tristate = Disabled
Memory Hole = Enabled
Unganged Mode = Enabled
Power Down Enable = Enabled
Power Down Mode = Channel
