If you have a drop in the thread should fall off to your left hand when holding it up. but if itis a front loading type the thread falls off to the right.

Hi! The motor pulley may be worn and cant turn properly causing the motor to be forced so much. The result will be an instant overheating that results to belt burn too. You will need to replace the motor, pulley and the belt now to make it running. Hope this helps and have a good one!

blunt needle-if the needle makes a popping sound when the needle penetrates the fabric,,the needle is blunt-replace
sometimes if the thread comes off the thread take-up lever it can jam the thread in the bobbin area
try rethreading the machine

SOURCE: The machine isn't making stitches.

Hello

Adjust the Stitch Length;

To make longer stitches, set the stitch length to a higher number. On many sewing machines, four is the longest possible stitch length and two is average.

To make shorter stitches, set the stitch length to a lower number. At a zero, the sewing machine may not actually make stitches, since the needle will go up and down in one place.

Cut a small scrap of fabric, preferably the same type you want to sew with.

Sew a few test stitches on the scrap. Examine the stitches to make sure they're the length you want.

Adjust the stitch length again as needed.

Needle making hole for stitch but not always picking up thread

It sounds like your bobbin thread is not timing it's pass (which is how it locks in a stitch) properly.

1st; Remove your bobbin case (if your machine has one), remove your bobbin. Check to make sure there are no threads wrapped around your bobbin case spindle, or around the machine spindle.
1nd; Clean your machine. Take a soft bruch and gently swab out your bobbin chase (where the bobbin goes). Blow gently into the area or use a small vacumn cleaner attachment to clean out all the fuzz created by sewing.
3rd; Oil your machine. Read your manual (I know, this goes against every thing we as Americans believe), to find all of the oil points.
If this doesn't fix the problem, you will probably have to take your machine in to a repair shop and have it serviced. They will reset the timing of your machine. If your are electronically or mechanically inclined you can reshearch how to do this yourself.

Why does the machine sound rough while stitching?

1. If you're capable remove the top, bottom and front panels.
2. Take an old rag and clean every part you can. Now, use a qtip to clean other difficult areas.
3. Rotate the hand wheel towards you and check for all moving metal parts that make contact with other metal areas. Oil these areas with sewing machine oil.
4. The front of the machine is where the needle bar and pressure foot bar is. Clean these areas and oil them.
5. Remove all of the parts where the bobbin sits. Clean them. There is the location where they sit on the machine called the race. Clean it and put one drop of oil on it. Put everything back together.
6. Adjust the bobbin.
Look at the figures and information to help you.

The machine wont move forward either by hand or using the foot pedal. I have tried cleaning around the bobbin area as per the instruction manual and added some of the provided oil

1. Increase the length of the stitch.
2. Check to see if you have the feed dogs down for free movement. Also, check to see if you have the machine set for bobbin wind.

Bottom stitch skips stitches

MY FIRST THOUGHT IS THE TIMING IS OFF A LITTLE. BEFORE SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY FOR A REPAIRMAN TRY THESE POSSIBLE CURES:
1. TRY TO SEW WITH THE NEEDLE ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT AND THEN TRY IT ON THE RIGHT. IF ONE OF THE TWO SEWS BETTER THAN THE OTHER YOU CAN BE ASSURED IT IS THE TIMING WHICH MEANS YOU NEED A REPAIRMAN.
2. JUST FOR GOOD HABITS DO THESE BEFORE GOING TO THE REPAIRMAN: CHANGE NEEDLE AND THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE BOBBIN AREA WITH CANNED AIR AND A QTIP TO CLEAN DIRT OUT. AFTERWARDS PLACE A DROP OF SEWING MACHINE OIL ON THE RACE THAT YOUR BOBBIN CASE FALLS IN.
3. PLACE TWO INCHES OF THREAD UNDER THE PRESSER FOOT. TURN THE HAND WHEEL TOWARDS YOURSELF AND WATCH IF THE UPPER THREAD WRAPS ON TOP OF THE BOBBIN CASE WHILE THE NEEDLE IS RISING. THE THREAD SHOULD PULL AROUND THE BOBBIN CASE WITHOUT CATCHING ON THE BRACKETS THAT HOLD THE BOBBIN CASE. IF IT DOES CATCH A LITTLE BIT YOU MAY NEED TO MOVE THE BRACKET AWAY FROM THE BOBBIN CASE ABOUT ONE PAPER WIDTH.

When sewing, mechanism sometimes binds. Bigger problem is when finished stitching, the hand wheel binds completely. Is there a mechanical problem or someplace to insert oil?

Hello Griff

Very likely the thread is kind of bound up in the bobbin area. Just turn the hand wheel a bit forward and backward several times -after you lift the foot. Apply a gentle pull on the fabric and it should "break" loose. Often teh thread is still stretched around teh bobbin and this releases it.
Feel free to reply to this post if this does not do it.

On my elna supermatic 722010 sewing machine, the thread makes the bobbin pop out and the thread get tangled underneath. I have had it fixed twice, which is expensive. Should I just get rid of it and buy...

not unless you can find another swiss elna, like star series su. check bobbin in right way, holes on top to wind and load. you havent bought anothet type bobbin??? go to www.arizonaexpressionz.com and download a manual for supermatic. then read bobbin winding and threading carefully and rewinf bobbin and thread up again. make sure thread goes into tension spring all the way. bobbin should turn anticlockwise when yoou pull thread. also please brush clean bobbin holder area and check for any threads caught there. now a drop of quality clear machine oil in middle hole and gently run for 30secs to work in. do this every time you get your machine out. there are several oiling points shown in manual. oil them. these machines are quality but yours may need love tlc from a elna tech especially if it has not been serviced in a while. but a well maintained elna will out stitch a new plastic machine any day in my humble opinion. if you want to join yahoo group elna heirlooms, experts who service their own and share photos info manuals and love these vintage classics.

I've been doing a lot of sewing over the past week and now the bobbin area sounds really noisy -like metal rubbing. The stitching is fine it sounds terrible. Do I need to oil the machine, and if so, where...

Hi. Your machine is probably just dirty. Have you cleaned out the lint? It will build up in the bobbin area and cause all kinds of problems unless you clean it out. A small brush works wonders. Take out the bobbin and bobbin case and clean all that old lint out. At the same time you clean the machine, you should also oil it. Use regular sewing machine oil and put one drop in all the oil ports (see my photo of an oil port at robbiesews.blogspot.com). If you don't see the oil port, the old rule of thumb was one drop of oil wherever a metal part rubs against another metal part.

I clean and oil my machines after every 8 hours of sewing and I think that's pretty much what the manufacturers recommend, although some new machines are self-oiling. Check your manual to be sure. (Self-oiling machines still need the lint cleaned out regularly.)\

Hope this helps!

My sewing mashine doent work propertly

First unplug the machine from the wall....Try cleaning the unit and oil at all the oil-points. Check that the unit is threaded properly. Check your tension of the thread, and the tension of the bobbin..Check the bobbin compartment for any thread strands. Remove the bobbin and holder and turnmachine by hand to see if the bobbin area rotates back and forth. The stitches are created with this action. If there is any debris clean it out . check the belt also ,many times the belt gets worn and slips. Hope that this helps I can only try to guess a solution, as your question is vague.

Husqvarna 2000 1974, uneven stitches

Take out the bobbin case, remove the bobbin. Using laquer thinner on a Q-tip or a thin rag, clean the center "hole" of the bobbin case. Then look at the post in the machine that the bobbin slides onto. Is there thread wrapped at the back of the post? Also clean the post with your cleaner. Once the post and the hole are clean, put a little sewing machine oil on your finger and wipe the post with it and the chattering noise of your bobbin will be gone.

Take the thread off the top of your machine, put in a new needle.
Turn your top tension to Zero and lift the presser foot, this will open the tension discs of your machine. Using a needle, scrape or clean the area between the discs. (Your needle also has a flat spot on the top of the needle, that faces the rear of your machine.) Also look for any rough edges in the hole of your presser foot or the hole in your needle plate. If there are any rough edges in the metal areas that your needle goes through, you would have poor stitching. Don't forget to put your tension dial back on the red dot before you sew.
