I'm guessing that you're referring to the aluminum mandrel housing: yes you can get the housing separately, better get some new bolts too, because the old ones will likely break off - use some anti-seize compound on them and it'll go alot easier

Replacing Riding Lawnmower Blade Belts.

I discovered on a Craftman Riding 3 bladed mower that there is an easy way to replace the belt for the blade pulleys.

The mandrel cover of the Left side blade is the only part you need to remove to replace the belt. You can insert the belt under the right side mandrel cover and onto the clutch pulley before finishing on the left side of the mower.

The tensioner or idler pulleys will contract when you pull on the belt. When you get to the left blade pulley you can turn the pulley with one hand and guide the belt with the other hand. The belt will walk right up onto the pulley. Attach the cover and you're done.

I like my method because you can stay away from a hot engine and replace the belt without waiting for the motor to cool off. You are also not fighting the mower clutch or drivebelt with my method.

I think that I over tightened the lock nut on one side (not using a tort wrench) after changing the mowing blades. I don't think it is cutting now. When I take the blades off from cutting, one blade...

there is a star shaped, or other, pattern on the bottom of the mandrel which fixes it into the blade. this has stripped so the blade is freewheeling on the mandrel. if you cannot remove the blade bolt, I think you are going to have to remove the deck and take it to a fabrication or machine shop to have them remove the blade from the mandrel. then you buy a new mandrel and a new blade, at a small engine repair shop, put it back together. take a picture of the top of the deck before you remove the deck belt so you know how to put it back on after you have the new mandrel bolted in. if it is old you may just want to replace all the mandrels while you are at it. they are less than 50 bucks each.

Is there any tricks to reassembling a Mtd blade spindle

the trick is to buy an entire new mandrel and install it into the deck. that way you attach the pulley to the top and the blade to the bottom and you are good to go. Then you do not need a machine shop.
any small engine or mower shop can get you a mandrel, they are all pretty much the same.

I think I hit a hidden tree root and there is nowa terrible noise from the blades. The one blade (RHS) seems loose and I just do not know what to do to tighten it. Can you help please.

The blade attaches to the bottom of the mandrel, which has a pulley on top driven by the deck belt, and there is a part in there which failed when the immoveable object met the irresistable force. So you may well have to take the deck off, remove and replace the mandrel, or a key on the bottom of the mandrel or buy a new blade. In any there is not a quick fix for this situation, some mechanical repair work has to be done.

Blades making a bad noise

Well I would say you have a bent blade, a blade has a loose connection to the bottom of the mandrel, or a mandrel bearing is going out. Visual inspection will reveal much, just look under the deck. A bad mandrel may appear to have "runout" when viewed from the top while spinning as contrasted with a good mandrel. Viewing the one in the center while deck is working is going to be a challenge. If you decide to replace a mandrel, do yourself a favor and take a picture of the deck belt before you take it off so you know how it goes back on.

Deck is leveled, blades are fine, spindle not bent it still cuts

there was a problem with the lighter gauge decks [thinner steel], and the deck would actually bend inward on the left side. this would tilt the mandrel inward making the blade cut at a slight angle to the right blade - there is tool to straighten the deck [the left mandrel housing usually breaks, though] - some shops have this tool, others have never heard of such a thing - most sears l&g field techs have this tool in their trucks - i have the tool in my shop, but i have had luck with turning the deck over and whapping it a couple of times on the inside edge of the left mandrel until the blades line up

Craftsman mandrel replacement::?????HELP

You dont have to drop the deck. Remove the belt first then hold the blade in place so you can loosen the nut on top of the pulley. after you remove the pully then remove the blade. There are 3 bolts holding the mandrel in place remove the bolts. Then pull the mandrel out from underneath the mower deck. There is a shroud that will come loose with it or it may stick from accumilated grass regardless it needs to go back during reassembly. When putting it back together the 3 bolts are usually self tapping into the new aluminum mandrel. Its much easier to put these in and take them out before you install the new mandrel as the bolts cut the threads.

Hope this helps

That 'Mandrel Housing' # has been changed to 492574. It should be available at just about any lawnmower shop, probably even at Wal-Mart.
