The AT&T EL51209 does not have an answering system. It will check your voice mail if you have that service from your telephone company. You need to check the voice mail FAQ from the provider to set an outgoing message. Otherwise, you'll need a separate answering machine that is connected to the phone jack and then connects to the EL51209.

Recording your greeting
message
You can record your own greeting
message (max. 2 minutes and 30
seconds). If you do not record a
greeting message, a prerecorded
greeting message is used.

4 After the handset beeps, speak
clearly about 20 cm (8 inches) away
from the microphone.

Record Your Announcement
You must record your announcements (A, b,C and RO) one at a time.
1 Select the announcement you wish to record.
2 Press and hold "ANNC/SKIP". When the system beeps, speak toward the microphone normally, from about nine inches away.
3 To stop recording, release "ANNC/SKIP". The system automatically plays back your announcement.
To review your announcement, press and release "ANNC/SKIP".
To erase your announcement and return to the pre-recorded announcement press "DELETE" while your announcement is playing.
