The Intermatic ST01 uses a CR2 3 Volt-DC battery to operate the "click-clack" ON - OFF function of the timer.

In order to change the battery, simply pull down the flap just below small display screen. This is the manual switch that you can push to turn the timer on and off.

Just use your fingernail at the top of the door flap and pull down, it will open up and reveal another small tab. This is the battery holder/tray.

To open this, either use your fingernail or a small flat bladed screwdriver at the top to slide out the battery holder tray.

If you remjove and replace the battery within 30 seconds or less, you won't have to reprogram the time/day/date/year. Otherwise taking longer you'll have to reset the time and date feature of the timer.

Don't worry, the timer remembers your program ON - OFF cycles regardless of whether the battery is in the timer or not.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Hello,
I just discovered that Intermatic is recalling the ST01 timer. Below is the intro to an article (and the URL for the rest) from Consumeraffairs.com. You might want to check into this.

Intermatic Inc. is recalling about 240,000 in-wall electronic timers, models ST01 and EI600. When consumers try to replace the timer’s battery place a metal object through the battery tray slot, the object can reach internal metal contacts, posing a shock hazard to consumers.

Does the Defiant Daylight Adjusting Indoor Digital Timer also uses a battery?

No battery.
This single-pole or 3-way, programmable or dawn-dusk timer is same as GE 15312 sun smart timer, and requires a neutral wire to power the electronics.
GE renamed all their wall timers, or sold their timer business to Defiant in year 2013-4.

http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-GE-15312-timer.html

If you want a timer with same capabilities, that uses a battery, and does not require neutral wire, then choose Intermatic ST01 or Ei600 timer

When hitting the next/on/off button, it dims the lights vice turning them off???

The EJ500 is rated for incandescent (resistive) bulbs only, and not LED CFL etc.
Max distance between light and timer is 100 feet and wire cannot be underground.
Replace with ST01 timer, or Ei600 timer... these timers are rated for any load (resistive or inductive), and are programmable or dawn-dusk... 7 day... single-pole or 3-way

Can Woods model 59007 be used in house without

http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-timers.html
Ground wire is not essential, but neutral wire is
yes the red wire has to be connected to black wire that goes to load

If all you have are two black wires, then use battery operated timer like ST01 or Ei600

I am unable to set the auto on and off

If reset does not restore functionality, then timer is bad, or in case of ST01 timer, the CR2 battery may need to be replaced.

1) Timer model and brand are unknown.

http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html

2) Add a comment and describe timer in detail, and add if this is new installation or older timer that stopped working.
