Sounds like you have a bad drum bearing. I would guess that it's grees rather than rust although it will look like rust.

It appears to be a known issue with these. I could put a couple of pints of CLR descaling solution in the bottom and leave it overnight. CLR is made for Calcium, Lime and RUST.

My washing machine stains my clothes with a brownish-black grease-looking smear stains! Awful. I've taken the center tub agitator out, looked inside for grease but there's nothing there. What's going...

You will need to check in the first place the water inlet that connects the washer as if the pipes are rusted then it will be bringing to the washer some stains along with the rust . So allow the water to be collected and checked outside and then connected to the washer and checked.
next check on the sides of the tub /drum for any rusted parts or foreign objects that are lodged into the drum.
Finally make sure that the tub is clean, the vents and all the sections connected are brushed off with light vinegar and detergent.

I get what look like rust streaks on my white clothing when I wash them in my washer. The stains do not come out even with straight bleach. RIT rust stain remover will get them out, but there's not...

1. Iron or manganese in the water supply. • Avoid using chlorine bleach on rust stains. It will make them darker and more obvious. • When iron is dissolved in the water, use granular detergent plus a non-precipitating water conditioner, such as Calgon or Spring Rain*. Better results may be obtained by dissolving detergent and water conditioner in the wash before adding the clothes. Be certain that all clothes are down into the water before starting washer. • If the iron is suspended in the water (it will settle out), attach a rust filter to the faucet and inlet hoses or to the water line. • If iron or manganese stains are a recurring problem, the customer may need a special filter or chemical feeder installed in the home to remove these minerals from the water supply. To remove: Launder with RoVer* Rust Remover Part No. 057961 using the directions below: • Top loading washers: a. Fill the washer with water (no detergent), selecting a temperature suitable for the fabric (hot or warm). b. Add 1/3 cup RoVer and let it dissolve by agitation. c. Add clothes and allow washer to complete the cycle. d. Follow up with an additional wash with detergent.

Be sure to check the spin basket for rust spots also.

Kenmore top loading washing machine does not clean clothes well.

I would seriously consider getting a newer machine. A brown stain could be rust, or an oil leak. Either way it probably is not worth putting any money into. If this helps, please rate my answer. Thank you.

I get oil stains on some items of clothing in each wash. I've tried discontinuing use of fabric softener as suggested by Sears, and I've also tried several loads of CLR to clean any grime or rust build up....

If this is a front loader, it is the bearings on the tub shaft. I just replaced a set on my front loader for the 2nd time. It is not a real easy fix but mine cost only cost 25.00 for the 2 bearings and seal. Not from Sears.

Washer whining when washing and spinning leaving brown stains on clothes

Turn water off. Remove hoses and clean the rust out of the strainers at hose end. If they are clogged they will sound funny when water goes through them.

Rusty stains on all white clothes washed

I don't think the washer is at fault; the clue is 'Used very little.' I think the rust is originating in the water pipes serving the washer. The only help there is to run one machine with no clothes in it (wasting water) or putting splitters on the faucets and flushing the lines into a sink or other drain. To remove rust stains from WHITE (!) clothing and many synthetics, buy a product named 'Whink.' It is available in many drug stores, super markets, etc. in the area where one finds other laundry items.  It is fairly safe to use (with precautions) but keep out of reach of kids.

Do I need to descale or rust treat my Washing Machine?

  • this is a common problem with aging kenmore washers (leaving coins in your pockets speeds it up).
  •  the basket is metal with a porcelain coating. the porcelain coating wears around the edge of the holes in the basket first, leaving bare metal.
  •  when the washer spins the centrifugal force pushes the clothes against the basket and a little into the holes. this leaves little rust rings on your clothes.
  • lumpy816 is correct in saying that your basket should be replaced. it does require a special tool, and the basket is expensive.
  •  in the mean time try to take the clothes out immediately after the washer stops spinning. and if you get desperate you can clean thee inside of the tub with a rust remover like LCR or a strong toilet bowl cleaner that removes rust.

Rust stains and bleach spots.

I'm sorry but the white spots will be due to bleach. It may be that there was undissolved bleach in the washer after the first load. Maybe some of it came out with the whites and lay in wait in the basket.

I doubt the makers would guarantee anything for 7 years, so no free basket or installation is likely. Seems there is a chip in the enamel and dampness / water from the previous wash days before sits there collecting iron as rust particles.

For the time being you could try rinsing the machine out before the first load. That might prevent the rust marks or reduce them.
