So your first problem is to learn how to login to your router. Please see your documentation. You can usually find the documentation for any router/homegateway at the vendors website.

If you still can't logon you may have to do a "hard reset" of the router/gateway to force it back to the default logon/password.

Now having solved that you need to understand that the largest MTU setting that you can use to increase your internet performance must be equal to or smaller than the smallest MTU setting between you and your internet target. If you make the MTU larger than that it will slow down your connection because it will now have to use 2 frames transmit and recieve what it used to only use one for.

While there are tools that can help you with that, the simplest solution is to find out what your ISP says the MTU should be.

My xbox is telling me my network doesnt have a sufficient mtu setting and i needto go to my router configuration webpage and set the mtu to auto or 1364 or higher. i have no clue what im doing

Most routers reside at the following IP address: 192.168.1.1
Go to your computer (hooked up to your network) and type that address into your URL field in your browser. Default passwords for almost all routers is as follows:
USERNAME: admin
PASSWORD: admin

Once there browse through the options and settings tabs. Change NOTHING YET. You want to look for an option called MTU. You will probably find it in a 'Settings' Tab or 'WAN' tab. Most routers should have this set to AUTO as default. Once you find it, ensure this is set to auto. Save changes and turn your router off and back on.
Turn the xbox off and back on as well and see if this resolves your issue. If your router was already set to auto for the MTU setting and you are still having issues, go back into your router and access the section where you found the MTU settings. This time set to 1364 instead of AUTO and save changes.
Repeat the off/on process on the router and xbox and see if this fixes your issue.

My xbox 360 says i need to set my mtu to 1364 or higher.. i have the virgin mobile mifi device.. how do I do this?

The way to access to your router settings differs from one router to another but basically it will always be through your PC most of them would be as follows:
1. Open an Internet explorer page on your PC.
2. On the address bar type 192.168.1.1 as for Netgear routers and 192.168.2.1 as for Belkin routers or 192.168.1.1 as linksys routers, if you have even any other brand you can try these three numbers I reckon one of them will work.
3. Then you click GO.
4. You'll get your router settings main page on the screen asking you for your Username & password usually by default the password will be even the same as the Username (Username: admin, Password: admin) OR it will be password (Password: password).
5. You can there look for MTU settings, it differs from one router to another you can just look for it then set it to 1365

Unalbe to connect ot x box live

Have you verified that on the router end of things?

On your computer, open up your browser and type in "192.168.1.1" on the address bar (where you type websites)

Next it will prompt you for a username and password. By default leave the username blank, and enter "admin" as the password.

When the page loads you will see a tab that says "Setup", click that. You will a setting that says MTU, change that to "Manual" and set the size to 1400, then hit "Save Settings"

After that unplug and re-plug your router (give about 20 seconds in between) and restart your XBOX. You should be good to go. If that does not work try to bypass the router and connect it directly to the modem to see if you have the same issue

Connecting router to xbox live

To change the router's MTU, do the following steps.

1. Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.1680.1.1 on the address bar
2. It will prompt you for username and password. By default, no username and password is admin. If the default password didn't work, try to type your own password for the router.
3. When you get to the setup page, under the Setup Tab, look for MTU. By default it is set to Auto 1500. Just click on Manual and set your preferred value.
4. Click on Save Settings at the bottom of the page.

You're all set.

My xbox live is saying mtu failed

Hi,

MTU stands for maximum transmission unit, which is, the maximum data that can be transmitted each time a network device sends out a signal.
I don't think you can change the MTU in the Xbox 360 dashboard.
You will probably have to go through a router to get around it.

the Maximum transmission unit is 1500, but for the Xbox 360 it must be set within the range 1364 – 1492.

So please access to the router setting on your PC & set it within the range 1364 – 1492 or call your ISP or router manufacturer to assist you doing so if you do not know how to access to your router settings.

I can give some steps to access router settings,

The way to access to your router settings differs from one router to another but basically it will always be through your PC most of them would be as follows:
1. Open an Internet explorer page on your PC.
2. On the address bar type 192.168.1.1 as for Netgear routers and 192.168.2.1 as for Belkin routers or 192.168.1.1 as linksys routers, if you have even any other brand you can try these three numbers I reckon one of them will work.

4. You'll get your router settings main page on the screen asking you for your Username & password usually by default the password will be even the same as the Username (Username: admin, Password: admin) OR it will be password (Password: password).
5. You can there look for MTU settings, it differs from one router to another you can just look for it then set it to 1365 as we said before.

Hope my info fix your problem,

Cheers.
