So your first problem is to learn how to login to your router. Please see your documentation. You can usually find the documentation for any router/homegateway at the vendors website.
If you still can't logon you may have to do a "hard reset" of the router/gateway to force it back to the default logon/password.
Now having solved that you need to understand that the largest MTU setting that you can use to increase your internet performance must be equal to or smaller than the smallest MTU setting between you and your internet target. If you make the MTU larger than that it will slow down your connection because it will now have to use 2 frames transmit and recieve what it used to only use one for.
While there are tools that can help you with that, the simplest solution is to find out what your ISP says the MTU should be.
