I believe the belt is off, but I am not able to get the cover off to put the belt back on. I have removed the two screws that seem to be holding it on, but am concerned that I will break something by trying to force the cover off.
I had the same problem. I hunted for another similar Scanmark 2500 online and now using for parts. Scantron will charge you your 1st born just 2 come look at the machine. They werent even willing to sell the belt i needed off the back of their truck.
Are you sure the belt is off?
To remove the side covers you need to remove the back cover, then the top cover. You will notice a small 'catch' on both sides of the side cover. You need to release to open the sides.
