SOURCE: Toshiba Laptop A60-S166 fdisk won't recognize hard disk?

Hmmm. Unusual report, "secondary optical disk". Sounds like you have a primary and secondary IDE setup. Something desktops had, but rare for laptops. Because of this, I would try setting the HD to "master". Most IDE HDDs have some extra pins beside the IDE pins, 4 or 6 pins in a separate compartment, same side as IDE jack. These are for choosing "master", "slave", and (default) auto detect. To find out which pins must be connected, look for a diagram on the lable or side of HDD. If none there, look up the specs on your HDD at the manufacturer's website. If all fails, It does not hurt to use "trial and error" on these pins. Either BIOS will be happy, -or ignore the setting. Try again until you find the right one. You need a small jumper to try this. If you are VERY careful not to wrap more than two pins, you can do this with a single wire from a copper stranded wire. Use hemostats and clip the excess off clean. Use a magnifying glass to verify it only touches (connects) two pins.

Personally, I would try THIS first, but it will cost you a bit of money... Buy an external IDE HDD case, with USB connector, insert your HD, plug it into a desktop PC, mount it, and use FDISK there. Always better to format a 2.5 inch drive via ext methods. Avoids funky BIOS corruptions, wacky 8mb Toshiba "recovery partitions" and MBR viruses. Also avoids the LBA limits many older laptops have, if YOU format the drive externally. This can also be the only problem. Not jumpers, but format methods. If the laptop is older than 3 or 4 years, I would suggest restricting ALL partitions to FAT32. Maybe C, D and E. Afterwards, the external USB case is a GREAT device to have, for exporting/storing large files from your laptop.

Let me know how it goes

SOURCE: Error 0x400 100 130000 1002 while restoring factory image HP

I am assuming you are trying to reinstall Vista. Apparently, HP's recovery partition is less than perfect and the recovery disc you created is probably worthless. (and you can NOT make another one, they only let you make one!) You are not the only person to have this issue.

Here are some things you can try:
1) Borrow an OEM version of Vista from someone...anyone. It sounds like you are proficient with PC's and maybe you know someone who works in IT. Use your product key (25 digit key code) and you should be able to reinstall.

2) if you like Vista, buy yourself an OEM version. It will not have all the factory (HP, Dell, Acer, whatever) BS on it. It will positively work because your hardware if fine.

3) Put XP on it. Personally, I think Vista is a mess. Microsoft is working on "OS7" and soon Vista will be like "Millennium".

Sorry it's not an easy fix, but glad your hard drive and memory show no errors.

SOURCE: Tried to boot from USD, CD/DVD Drive but failed. Still showing No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

To boot up from the DVD drive go into the BIOS setting - boot device order and move the DVD as the first boot device and the hard disk as the 2nd boot device.
If you want to boot up with the USB then move the USB as the first device. If the USB is not listed as a boot device then it is not possible to boot up with an USB device.

There's a sound during startup

Hello,

There is no problem with your computer. It's just natural to have a beeping sound during start up. If there is, then it will show an error message in the screen.

If it's just a short beep, then it's normal.

Hi, when I turn on my Acer (aspire 5741 series) laptop it gets stuck on a screen with the acer logo, & says 'press F2 to setup' in the corner. If I press F2 or any other key, the computer just beeps....

This may be caused by any of the below reasons.

  1. New hardware has been recently installed.
  2. Error or confliction with settings in CMOS.
  3. CMOS battery is bad or failing.
Try removing any newly installed Hardware, if still not working, goto CMOS setup, press F9,if asked, press Y and then F10 and then Y. If still not working, try Formating the C drive, your windows file are corrupt.
