It all depends on what service/equipment you have. Most will need a code to be entered while the outgoing message is playing. Many use the asterisk * as a trigger then you enter the password you set up originally.

SOURCE: Uniden Answering Machine - retrieving messages

My login didn't get accepted with the above solution.
I want to edit that this solution works for my older 2.4GHz base units (models DCT-748 and DCT-7488) - both are about 3 yrs old.

You will need to set a security code. When you're away you can call your home phone and enter the code to retrieve your messages. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Retrieving messages away from home.

Hello,

When you are away, you call your number and waiting for the welcome message (your message). When the machine invites you to leave a message you enter your secret code, the one you entered when you configured the machine. (Usually there is default, but since you don't have a manual there is no point guessing (although 123 may do the trick). Some older phones have a code sticker on the underside of phone.)

When the code is recognized the machine starts giving instructions press (number) to (do something).

Hope it helps.

SOURCE: how do i retrieve telephone messages when away

A remote code must be entered to operate the system remotely. The factory code setting is "111" and you can set your own personal code by following the directions on page 31 of the phone system operating guide.

To check messages from a remote location, dial your number from any touch tone phone, enter your code after the greeting message begins, then follow the voice prompts.

Need the manual? You can download/print it here:

How do I retrieve my voice mail when I'm away from home?

Go to the base unit.
scroll to the answering machine option.
Under there is a setting for your security key.

you can read what's there, or change it to your own two digit code.

when you call in, during the message, enter that two digit code and it'll go into messages. There's a "toll saver" mode so that the machine answers after two rings instead of 4, so that if you call and it rings 3 times, you know there's no new messages.

How to retrieve voice mail from another phone

The factory preset code is "11".

Call your phone from a touch tone phone. Enter your remote code (11, or whatever you set it to) during the greeting message. The number of new messages will be heard, and the new messages will be played.

Remote message retrieval

When you first installed your GE Digital Messaging System, you heard the code that was auto set for it. Once you are out and away from home, phone home and during the answering machine promp press # and then the promps will ask you for your 'pass word [code]. Please be careful as messages deleted by you, you may not beable to retrieve them. This machine doesn't run by cassette tapes.
~ hope the above helps.
