Does this calculator support more than 1 decimal place result?

  • Anonymous Sep 18, 2008

This is so frustrating. I had the calculator in my bag, pulled it out one day & all of a sudden it now only shows 1 decimal place on computations causing me to get inaccurate answers on tests and such. I've spent numerous hours trying to find the solution on how to change it back and no luck. Not even Canon's website can provide any assistance.

    for + _ * / calculation, decimal digits missing.

    for example 13+0.3 = 13

I called Canon customer support. There is a tiny reset button on the lower back area of the calculator. Simply stick a small object in there to reset the calculator and you should be as good as new! Worked for me!

The reset button doesn't work for me either. But I discovered when I don't hit the "=" button, whatever decimal place is shown.

Eg. "1.252 x 1.2 + " I got 1.5024 it displayed the entire decimal.

The [MODE] key can be used to select the modes described below.
Important! The following is a general explanation of Scientific Calculator modes. Note that your calculator may not include all of the modes described here.
1) Calculation Modes
Before performing a calculation, you first need to select the appropriate calculation mode.
COMP: Basic arithmetric calculations
(arithmetic operations, trigonometric functions, etc.)
COMPLEX: Complex number calculations
SD: Single-variable statistical calculations
(sample standard deviation, etc.)
LR or REG: Paired-variable statistical calculations
(linear regression statistical calculations, etc.)
BASE or BASE-n: Binary, octal, decimal, hexadecimal number system calculations
MAT: Matrix calculations (determinants, etc.)
VCT: Vector calculations
EQU: nth degree equations, simultaneous equations
2) Display Settings
Use these settings to control how calculation results are displayed.
Note that changing the Fix and Sci settings does not affect internal calculation results.
Norm: Exponential display format and cancels the currently configured Fix and Sci settings.
Fix: Specifies a fixed number of digits to the right of the decimal place.
Sci: Specifies a fixed number of significant digits.
3) Angle Unit Setting
(90°=?/2 radians=100 grads)
Deg: Degrees
Rad: Radians
Gra: Grads
4) Engineering Mode
Use this mode when you want to input and perform calculations using engineering symbols.

Why are totals rounding off

In the product details of this calculator, it states that there is a "decimal point selector." This is normally a slider starting with the letter F followed by the numbers 0123 etc. It is probably on 0. You can set the number of decimals to whatever you want, or use F for full numbers. For example, if you set this to 2, you should always get 2 decimals.

Good luck,

Paul

How do I stop calculator from rounding up?

Hi Carol,

There are switches at the top just under the screen called the "Rounding Switch" and the "Decimal Point Selector Switch".

With the rounding switch you can select rounding up or down, but you may also want to use the second switch to show more digits after the decimal. Put it in the "F" position to show all decimal places. When it is in the 0, 1, 2 positions, it strips off and round the numbers.

Here is the link to the manual as well, look at the section detailing the "Decimal Point Selector Switch".

(You will need an Adobe Acrobat Reader to look at the manual.)

Hope this will help you. http://downloads.canon.com/cpr/software/calculator/P23-DHV-(USA-HWB).pdf

How to change decimal point

If you want all entries and answers to have two numbers after the decimal, you should have a lever or slide that shows F,6,3,2,1,0. Some also show Add. Set the lever on the 2 or add. F means floating decimal. the others indicate how many numbers after the decimal.

HP 12 C display does not show entire numbers. How do I fix?

If you mean it is not showing everything after the decimal point, you can change that by pressing the [f] key followed by the number of decimal places to display. For example, to restrict it to 2 places, press [f][2]. If you want to see 4 places, press [f][4].

To show all possible decimal places, use the sequence [f][9].
From the manual (http://www.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00363319.pdf):
"To display a different number of decimal places, press f followed by a digit key (0 through 9) specifying the number of decimal places. In the following examples, notice how the displayed form of the number inside the calculator - 14.87456320 - is rounded to the specified number of digits."

25096057-rvrejqbjq4zuw4cbinsyjvsy-5-0.png "Although nine decimal places were
specified after f, only eight are
displayed since the display can
show a total of only 10 digits. "
The standard display format, plus the specified number of decimal places, remain in effect until you change them; they are not reset each time the calculator is turned on. However, if Continuous Memory is reset, when the calculator is next turned on numbers will be displayed in the standard display format with two decimal places
shown.
If a calculated answer is either too small or too large to be displayed in the standard display format, the display format automatically switches to scientific notation. The display returns to the standard display format for all numbers that can be displayed in that format.

On my version, which was bought in Canada in 2015, you can change between 0,2,4 and a floating number of decimals. It's pretty bizarre and I had to trial and error to figure it out based on a couple of the existing answers.

First, hold down AC and press M+, the display should then show one of the following:

0
0
0.00
0.0000
(Yes there are two different modes that show the same single 0 on the display which is super unhelpful. Unfortunately the two different modes that will show zero are the floating point (which is the one that gives you as many decimals as can fit on the screen) and the 0 decimal place rounding off mode which gives you only the answer rounded to the nearest whole number. In my calculator the modes cycle through in this order: F,0,2,4.)

To switch between the modes you hold down CE and then press M+ at the same time. That will change from one mode to the next but it will not show you which mode on the screen unless you let go press AC and M+ at the same time again. I think you can press M+ repeatedly to while holding down CE to step through the modes, but the screen doesn't show you anything so I found I had to do it step by step as follows:

1. While holding down CE press M+ and then let go
2. While holding down AC press M+ and then let go
3. Assuming you are trying to get to F mode, if the display shows either 0.00 or 0.0000 after step 2 then repeat steps 1-2 until the display shows 0 after step 3. (if after going through steps 1-3 at least twice, your screen never shows 0.00 or 0.0000 then these steps may not apply to your calculator)
4. If your screen shows 0 after step 3 (and assuming you were starting from the mode that was rounding off all decimals), then at that point you SHOULD be in F mode. To test, try a calculation like 3.555x3.555. you should get an answer with 6 decimal places. If you don't, then you are still on the wrong decimal mode (you may have skipped past F mode accidentally and ended up back where you started or this may be the wrong set of steps for your specific calculator.)

This specific set of steps worked for me.

Sharp EL- M332 caluclator- have a 'O' along top line- can't seem to get rid of it- must have accidentally selected something. It is not showing any decimals.

Hold (C.CE) then whilst holding it press (M+) for approximately a second and it will move one place along in the three settings (F, 2 and 0) F shows full decimals, 2 shows 2 decimal places and 0 as yours is set to now round to the nearest whole number. I have just been sat at my desk trying to work this out as my calculator was too set to '0'. Took me reading the 'DEC DET' text with lines pointing at 'M+' and 'C.CE' to finally crack it!

Hope this helps.

I have done something so the calculator is only displaying whole numbers and will not show anything after the decimal point. Thanks!

Hello
The floating point number display (FIX) is set to zero decimal digits. All your. numbers with decimal parts are rounded.
Look for a key that says [FIX]. Press it and enter a number say3 If I guessed right (Sharp makes numerous calculators) your numbers will show 3 decimal digits.

If there is no such key look for a [MODE] Button. Press the button. If you have a new screen with differents choices look for Format, Float,
On some older calculators there is a table below the display. At the left of the table one finds MODE--> or -->MODE
If it says there Mode DEG:4 that means to have angles in degrees you enter [MODE][4].

I think I exhausted all possibilities. Without you model number, I cannot do more.

Hope it helps.

I found this solution on the HP website. Turn it on, and do what it says. Then turn it off and back on again, and the extra decimal places should show.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?dlc=en&lc=en&cc=us&docname=bpia5183 Introduction This document describes how to set the desired number of decimal places on the HP 12C Calculator in standard format and in scientific notation. Instructions for standard format
  1. Press and release the gold PREFIX key (f).
  2. Press the number key for the desired number of decimal places (0 through 9).
The display will show the specified number of decimal places. The answer will be rounded to the number of digits selected.
