50pf9631d ambilight has gone out on one side, how do I repair it with out paying philips (or an authorized dealer) outrageous rates, for a problem that has clearly affected MANY Ambilight owners? This is something that CLEARLY should have been covered under an extended warranty along with the power supply issue which I LUCKILY had repaired several days after (I made the call to support before) my warranty expired. In any case, the actual bulb on the right side of the tv no longer produces light when the tv is on, which is the only time it would work of course. The tv it-self works fine as does the left hand side Ambilight. My technical level is moderate and I am not uncomfortable opening up the back of the tv if it is a matter of taking out a bulb and replacing it.

Ok its possible it is the light itself which would be cheaper- or- it could be the ambilight driver- each ambilight has a driver that tells it to turn on supplys power etc-its not difficult to change-usually located on either one side and the lights all run from it or one on each side-depends- its small rectangular and you can follow the wire from the light back to where it plugs in to the driver- try shopjimmy dot com for parts

The failure with your plasma is with defective capacitors in the power supply.

Phillips ambilight 50 in red light problem

I had this problem on a 42" Philips Ambilight. After reading in another forum, opened up the back, and found 2 leaking capacitors on the center circuit board (main power supply pc board) toward the bottom. Tops of the capacitors were bludged out (10v 3300uF) and leaking electrolytes. Unsoldered the old ones myself, went to Radio Shack. They were out, so order 12 on ebay for $6.63 including shipping. Resoldered and works fine. Can't do it yourself? Take the board out (just unhook the cables & unscrew it ), and take it to a computer shop or tv repair or someone who knows how to solder, and have them change them. Piece of cake!

Hi Mikshanks,

I had the same problem with my TV. It was a horizontal problem with different shades of color, and black spots. I replaced my Upper & Lower Y-buffer boards. Your Y-sus board should be okay since it still powers on the screen. You should replace the Y-buffers Upper & Lower, and it should work. I hope this helps.

best regards,
Tyler
