Black Screen Bought wife L18 last Xmas. Used once since. Turn it on and lens comes out, but screen is nearly completely black. Menu items barely readable if not viewed under bright light. "Reset ALL" at Setup does nothing. Replaced batteries 3 times, and have taken batteries out of camera for several weeks. No change. Cannot see on-screen image even in bright sunllight. Real piece of junk you made there, Nikon!

When I turn on the camera the screen is black. The digital screen works for menu options but is completely black when trying to take a picture

Hi,

The black screen problem means the lens sensor is spoiled due to over exposure to heat. Its better to give it to Olympus service centre. If your camera is under warranty period its well and good they will replace the lens sensor for free of cost.

Thank you

It's the lens that cause the problems. If parts are available, try replacing it.

Lens & screen show black instead of item to be shot.

You need to go into the menu function to turn the screen on (this feature saves the batterys)

Camera lens

Hi,
Does the camera take pictures?
If you take the camera near a lamp, can you just about see menu items on the LCD?
If so, it's possible that the backlight ribbon cable slipped out of the socket. To check open up the back of the case and carefully lift it up a bit just to see the ribbon cables. The narrow one is used for backlight. Try to disconnect it (open the tiny black flap in the connector) and connect it again (close the black flap). Have a quick look at the connectors on the ribbon cable and make sure they are clean. If it still doesn't work I'm afraid most probably you have a faulty backlight and will need to replace either the whole LCD (easy) or just the backlight (fairly fiddly job). In any case, you'll probably need a donor camera (ebay ;) to scavenge for replacement LCD.
Good luck,
Raf

Lens problems

Try opening your camera, check the lens gear if its teeth are complete. If so, check if something stucks on it. Its much better to bring your camera to an authorized service center to re timing your lens track... ^_^
