I press play, and the record starts spinning and the arm begins to move into place. Before the arm can move fully into place, the record stops spinning and the arm moves back into the resting place. I have tried manually turning the record, and when i do this the arm moves into place and plays, however when i stop manually spinning and press play, the record stops spinning. Please help!

It powers up, lights come on but the platter won't spin. ... However when I press "start", nothing happens and the platter won't spin when ... the arm towards the record without pressing the "start" button. ... SL 7, SL-10... and / or any of the fully automatic Technics turntables using optical record detection......etc

Hi, most likely the auto function needs resetting. With the power off turn the platter manually clockwise a dozen or so times. Power up and play. Cheers john.
There is a switch just under the tone arm. When the tone arm moves towards the centre it slowly pushes two copper strips together. When they meet it starts the motor to eject the record. If you can't Cancel the record with the cancel button then that is a different problem, otherwise you can adjust the trip switch by inserting a 7mm spanner down the hole to the right of the tone arm post.

If it is a turnatable that starts spining when the arm is moved to the record, then more than likely the start/stop switch inside the turnable is broken and is fixed in the on position. Or the leaver mechanism has become detached from the arm when the record was playing and left the other part pressing on the same switch that turns the motor on or off. Removing the bottom of the turntable should should show the trouble.
I don't know the AT PL50 but I had a similar problem with another make of turntable.
The problem was caused by the rear end of the pick-up arm hitting the side of the perspex cover. The solution was a simple one - leave the lid in the raised position or lift the cover right off when playing records.
WASH YOUR HANDS FIRST! Any oils on the drive belt may cause slippage.
This is from the manual:
A) Remove the record mat from the turntable platter
(Fig. 10a). Through an opening in the
turntable platter, visually inspect to see if the drive belt
is around the motor pulley (Fig. 10b).
B) If the drive belt is not around the motor pulley: Lift
and remove the turntable. Place a thumb into each of
the left and right openings on the turntable platter; and,
using the fingers to press down on the turntable housing’s
surface, pull the platter straight up (Fig. 10c).
Avoid pressing on the tone arm.
C) With the turntable platter bottom side up, place the
belt along the outside wall of the turntable platter's
drive rim, making certain that the belt is smooth and
flat all the way around (Fig. 10d).
D) Put the turntable back on the center spindle, make
certain it is fully seated, and align one of its openings
over the motor pulley position.
E) Through the opening, carefully hook the turntable
belt with a finger or with the original red ribbon (never
use a sharp object) and pull the belt over the motor
pulley (Fig. 10e). Make certain the belt is not twisted
between the pulley and the platter’s drive rim.
F) Put the record mat back on the platter.
G) While holding the tone arm in its rest position,
slowly turn the platter by hand clockwise at least 10
rotations to clear the mechanism’s automatic cycle.
