I discovered that you must only use an SD card and not an SDHD card.
I bought a bigger SD card (2Gig), installed it and copied the data I wanted without any probs. With the SDHD card I couldn't transfer anything and didn't get any help as to why...(there's a lot to be said for trial & error).
Not sure which model year you have but check for a small reset button on bottom press and hold it with a paper clip or similar. Also try holding the power button for a minute to see if it reboots, try removing the memory card first. If it starts don't insert the memory card until the unit is off. If that still does not work click on the link below which will explain the reset in detail. Thanks for using FixYa
its cause everything erases when you take out the memory card so put in the memory card in the tom tom and restore your tom tom orr update it and it will work again
The card may have become corrupted or has failed. You can try to recover it so you can copy off the files but that isn't always succsessfull. Go to my computer. Find the card right click then click on properties and then the tools tab and then click on error checking.
time to get a new sd card even if you can restore and read the original. Once they act up they can die again and permanently at any time.
Have you installed an expansion memory card in the 720? Sometimes it wont let you download music because you have filled up the internal memory. You need to put music on to the separate expansion card. BUT... when connecting to the computer to update map corrections and software, if you have not selected INTERNAL MEMORY when it connects, it won't be able to find the tom tom software, so it will just think you have another external USB hardrive attached. SO... take the expansion card out of the tom tom, then connect the tom tom to the computer in the normal way - Voila, suddenly it now sees the tom tom and you can update software. But do not download any more music to the internal memory. Ultimately you will have to format the EXTERNAL expansion card to clear it of any tom tom software updates, then download ONLY MUSIC to the external card. Do not hit Update My Tom Tom while connected to the external card - only do this when connected to the internal memory.
1. Remove the SD card
The card needs to be formatted properly first that's all,
2. formatting is better done in a card reader.
3. Right click on it and select format select FAT32 as the files system
4. Now connect the tomtom but don't let tomtom home run. exit TTH if need be.
5. You now ned to select your tom tom which will also show as a drive.
6. In windows explorer select tools then folder options. Click view and tick the box for "show hidden files and folders" It may warn you but you can ignore it.
7. Then just copy ALL the files from the tom tom to your sd card
8. DO NOT USE CUT AND PASTE !
9. Once all the files are on switch off the tom tom and insert the sd card
The way the TomTom One works (unfortunately) is that it reads either from the SD slot of from internal memory, but not both. So you can't have the SD act as supplemental memory. I had the same problem and was pretty peeved about it. You would have to spring for a more expensive model to get this feature :S
