Check skimmers baskets and filter pump baskets to make sure there is no flow obstructions. If the filter pressure is low when running normally it indicates there is a suction blockage which could just be a full leaf basket.

The first hint i would suggest is only turn selector in clockwise direction always.
not to insult but you must have pump off during selectiong.
Now, The ball valve sounds like it is out of alignment.
because of wear, from going back and forth not rotational.
you can check for alignment by checking to see if you have any flow coming out return nozzle into pool. There should be none during backwash.
pressing the handle down unlocks rotation, so if you are handy remove selector from top of filter, then check motion as you move selector. I have used o ring lubricant to lube parts in selector.
BEFORE DISSEMBLING NOTE POSITIONS OF BALL Inspect how the push down to rotate function.
If lubing is no help creating smooth rotation you may need to replace assembly.

Are you using the rinse setting for a few seconds following the backwash? If not, once you finish washing, stop the pump, change the valce to rinse, then run it about 3 to 5 seconds. Shut down then switch to filter and the particles should stop coming back to the pool.

SOURCE: hayward pool motor shuts off in backwash mode.

Check the pump suction filter? To backwash it, is to
open the backwash tank cleanout valve, to clear the dirt out. If this does not work, check the pipelines going to the backwash tank for clogged lines.

SOURCE: I have 7 year old Hayward ProSeries, S-244S, H/R Sand filter. I've notice that when I vacuum the pool, dirty water returns to the pool. I've backwashed and the spider gasket is fine. No sa

sand filters only have limited filtration. If the dirt is very fine such as dead algae, it will go right through the filter. Use a clarifier to help give the filter finer filtration. Do not vacuum until you can see what you are doing, then vacuum on 'waste'

How to use backwash to waste

When the filter get clogged the pressure in the filter increases and there is less water flow returning to the pool.
If your filter is a sand filter, when you turn the valve to backwash and turn on the pump it reverses the water flow in the sand filter to flush the dirt out of the filter to waste. Look at the window openning in the waste pipe and keep the backwashing goinging until you see clear water.
Then turn off the pump and move the control valve to Rinse, turn on the pump for a few minutes, this returns the water flow back to normal but the water goes to waste to make sure the sand filter is clean.
Turn off the pump and move the control valve to filter and turn on the pump. This mode is the normal operating mode and the pressure gauge in the sand filter will show a drop in pressure.
Some pressure gauge shows a red section to indicate when backwashing should be carried out.

If I turn to back wash, will I lose sand. Should I use waste out to clean the filter

Backwash is meant to clean the sand and remove dirt from the filter.
Waste simply pumps the pool water to the drain line and doesn't clean the sand.
If the filter has its distributors, the sand should be held in the canister.

Backwash the filter. If the water coming out of the backwash line is not dirty you need a sand change. If the water is dirty you need to continue let the water filter and back washing once a week. Also make sure the six way is on filter and not recirculate

Backwash until water in the sight glass is clear, shut off the pump and change the valve setting to rinse, turn the pump on for a couple seconds and then back off, change the valve setting to filter and return to normal operation. NEVER move the valve handle while the pump is on.

Just installed a hayward pump and followed directions on the pump having problems when we tried to backwash it shoots sand into the pool

Backwash should put no water back into the pool. It should be sending filter dirt to a waste line. Maybe your lines are incorrectly installed?
Secondly, under normal conditions, sand does not go to backwash waste either. Could there be too much sand in the filter?

My hayward sand filter will filter but the backwash and rinse does not work. What can be the problem?

Do you have a multi port valve or a push pull?

And what is the evidence it doesn't work???

Disassemble the valve and check the O rings or the spider gasket. If a multi-port ... you are suppose to turn it ONLY in a clock-wise direction.

Since yo mention rinse, Im guessing you have a multiport valve. You will not see much evidence of activity in this mode ... this blows the last little bit of backwash water out the waste line.

Do you have a site glass on your back wash?
