Craftsman garage door opener 1/2 hp will not open door

Door would not open. Sensors are fine. We have disengaged the handle, so trolley can run without moving the door. (Trolley holder is about a foot from garage door.) It makes a hum for a few seconds and trolley runs from trolley holder to the door and returns to the trolley holder. It will not run along the bar towards the opener. What's wrong and how do I fix it? We had to replace the trolley because when this happened the tension was so great it broke the metal ring on the trolley holding the chain! Please help!!

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.

Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener motor just buzzes when the remote is pushed no movement

Check to see if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so loosen the chain enough to remove the tension of the trolley. Now run the motor until the door closes. While the door is closed, locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

We have a 1/2 HP Craftsman Opener from the mid 90's. Problem is it won't close -- closes about 6 inches, then reverses. I tried increasing the down force, changed the limit, even put more slack in the...

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them a bit. If you cannot get both lights to come on your sensors are bad.

I have a Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener. Last night I had to open it using the emergency release due to power failure at house. Now it won't catch the door to open it although the chain mechanism...

That lever that the red handle pulls down is made to catch in the unlatched position. You can pull down on it again, and then pull the cord for and aft (parallel to the chain rail) and let it snap back up. Then either run the trolley or move the door and it will click back in.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage opener opens only 6 inches

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It may be stripped. Take a close look at those door springs. They can sometime appear to be okay when one is broken.

Door can be opened manually when the trolley has

You can adjust the length of the arm between the trolley and door so that it is in a vertical position when the door is closed. This will prevent your problem.

Garage door opens 1 foot, then stops.

It sure sounds like you have a broken door spring. While you are at it remove the cover and take a good look at the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. Might be stripped and unable to take the weight of the door.

1/2 hp craftsman garage door opener won't open when cold

I called Sears garage door customer service number due to the same issue. The test is to disengage the opener drive by pulling the emergency disengage handle, then open the door half way manually and then let it go. If it stays there it is a door/track/lub problem; if it drops down and closes its a garage door opener problem. Mine stayed open half way during this test so it was a door/track/lub problem. After using silicone spray on all tracks, rollers, and springs mine has been working great. Good luck.........
