Put a Windows XP disk (has to be the full version not an upgrade) into the CD drive and the computer will ask to "press any key to boot from CD". Press a key. Follow the prompts, It is important to delete the partition when asked. Then recreate it. Format the drive with NTFS file system. The setup will go on to reinstall windows automatically.
Now, the only challenge is to reload any software drivers for components Windows does not find automatically. This is a little tricky. Do google search of Acer drivers or go to www.drivers.com.
Also, remember all your software programs need to be re-installed. For example, your Microsoft Office (word, excel, etc). Any games, any virus protection, Quickbooks, etc. The printer software also needs to be re-installed. Hopefully you still have the original disk or if its a Hewlett Packard go to their website.

Hello, before you can reformat your laptop, you will need a start up disk or a windows xp disk so that you can reinstall after formatting.insert the windows xp CD into your DVD ROM, allow it to boot fro CD. and allow it to load into the windows xp setup. You will see the setup wizard, follow the wizard till you are done with the formatting

Sorry to hear about your lost pics. That stuff is priceless. To avoid this I partition my hard disk using c: for windows and d: for storage. If windows crashes and you are forced to reformat your precious data is still safe in the d: drive.

Hello,
You didn't mention which version of (I assume Windows) you are using or are wanting to use.
Generally when you want to reformat the hard drive on a machine it involves re-installing the operating system also. A freshly formatted hard drive has nothing on it and so the computer won't boot.
Here is what you need to do:
You will need an installation disk for what ever version of Windows you plan to run.
Also you should have a drivers disk for your machine. This is not absolutely necessary but is by far the easiest way to deal with the drivers.
Place the Windows installation disk in the CD/DVD drive and reboot the machine. Read the messages provided on screen. When you get to the point where the installation program asks you if you want to create a new partition on your drive select yes. It will also allow you to delete the old partition. You want to choose that option and then install Windows in the new partition.
After the Windows installation is complete you will need to install drivers for your machine. If you have the drivers disk for your machine put it in the CD/DVD drive and select 'Install All Drivers' from the menu. (You can purchase a drivers disk for your machine from Acer, or elsewhere on the web.)
If you do not acquire a drivers disk for your machine you will have to download them one at a time from Acer. You may or may not be able to download them all.
